Encourage students to read<\/p>\n

One of the weaknesses of many students today is they do not like to read. When they have to read something, they just glancing through it rather than focus on the materials and that may explain why some students\u2019 knowledge is shallow, not deep enough to solve technical problems. Many students only read what is required by the school and nothing more so their knowledge is limited to academic theories but not practical enough to meet the needs of the industry. Without proper knowledge or understand technology trends, many may not know what is going on in the job market, what skills are needed, and what should they do to strengthen their career opportunity. To encourage them to read and develop good reading habit, I often give reading assignments in all of my classes.<\/p>\n

For first year students, I encourage them to read whatever they can find and share them with their classmates. Before each class, students must complete a short reading on any technology topic that they found on the Internet. In class, I randomly select two students to share with the class on what they have read. They must tell the class where they found the material; how they read the material; and what they think was important in the reading. This will force all students to read the material carefully and understand it well. Since I select students randomly, the whole class must read something as they do not know who I will select. I encourage students to listen to the presentation and come up with questions. This activity encourages students to explore technology beyond what they learn in school. It also helps develop students\u2019 presentation skills, listening skills, and communication skills when they are discussing with one another about the materials. By participating in this exercise, students learn more about the importance of reading and learning beyond what the school required.<\/p>\n

For second year students, I require that they read something relates to class materials that they found on the internet so the topic is narrowed down to particular class subjects. This exercise will force them to go deep rather than broad. The presentation has to be \u201csemiformal\u201d with five pages slide presentation so students also learn more about presentation skills. As the course progresses and activities grow more challenging, students will develop both soft-skills (Presentation skills, public speaking etc.), as well as the ability to read materials carefully to be successful in life.<\/p>\n

For third year students, the class discussion is getting formal with weekly readings assignments. I select what they must read as well as the topics that they must know and students are working in team of 4 people. They must\u00a0come to class having done the readings and ready to present. I select a team randomly and give them 20-30 minutes to lead the class discussions. In this assignment each team is having four roles: The Facilitator, the Key pointer, the Industry connector, and the Reporter. Team members assume one of these roles in each discussion. The facilitator comes prepared with questions that he uses to facilitate the class discussion. The key pointer raises important ideas in the reading that he finds interesting and summarizes these points for the class. The Industry connector makes connections between the reading materials and industry technology needs and how they could use them to meet their needs. The\u00a0reporter\u00a0summarizes the group\u2019s discussion, including areas of confusion and ideas they found interesting. In this exercise, students learn to discuss technical issues, solve problems as well as relate reading materials with how they are used in the industry.<\/p>\n

For over twenty years of teaching, I found that most student responses positively to this method where they learn soft-skills as well as broaden their technical knowledge.
