A student wrote to me: \u201cCan you tell me about the H1B visa program and the new immigration laws that allow foreign students to stay and work in the U.S. How much do they get paid and how long could they stay?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Answer: Due to the critical shortage of skilled workers. The U.S. Congress is currently working on a new immigration reform laws to allow students who graduate with a Master and PhD degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math degrees (STEM) from U.S universities to stay and work in the U.S. as permanent residence (Green Card).<\/p>\n

The H1-B visa program created in 1990 allows graduates with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in high demand skills to be hired by U.S companies ONLY if there are no U.S Citizens or permanent residents qualified for the job.\u00a0This program has a limit sets at 65,000 visas for foreign workers and 20,000 more for workers with at least a Master\u2019s degree or higher. The limit does not apply to people hired by nonprofits organizations and research institutions, so the total number of foreign workers on H-1B visas is much higher. It is estimated that each year over 120,000 workers enter and work in the U.S via this H1B program where they can stay for three years and their employees can renew their visas for three more years.<\/p>\n

All H1B visa workers must be college graduates and work in high demand areas such as science and technology fields. According to the U.S. Immigration Services, more than half of the H1B visas workers were young, most were in their 20s. If they are hired, they are paid the same as anyone, as there is no difference between a citizen and a non-citizen as they are both employees. Typical software workers with a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science can make about $85,000 a year regardless where they come from. Currently, Google, Microsoft and several top technology companies are the biggest user of H-1B visas and the majority of workers are from India due to their technical skills and good command of English.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
