This also requires changes in the way company operates and manages its people. In the past, capital is the key asset but today the key asset is skills, as most works have become knowledge works and no longer labor work. As automation and robots can perform many labor works, remaining works are mostly knowledge works. This fundamental shift is critical because management must change their thinking from focusing on managing budget to focus on managing the skills of workers.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional managers are responsible to make sure that work is done based on certain expectations. They are given resources such as workers and budget and their jobs is to make sure that workers do their jobs within a given budget and time. This places managers in a controlling and decision making position. Today the nature of work has evolved from manual labor to knowledge work. Most knowledge workers are highly educated and they do not respond well to being told what to do. They have skills to do their jobs and do not need much direction. Sometime, they often know more about what to do than their managers. Instead of telling workers what to do, the \u201cNew manager\u201d must discuss with them on what they think should be done to get better quality and efficiency. Instead of being decision makers, the \u201cNew managers\u201d must be facilitators.<\/p>\n<p>Another major change that affect management is the creation of a better working environment that fosters innovation and efficient. Since the traditional management role is simply get things done according to a given budget, managers cannot tell workers to be creative, to invent new things, to develop new process, or to reduce waste. Workers only do what managers tell them to do, regardless whether company is profitable or not; regardless whether things are done efficient or not; regardless whether things are wasteful or not. However, skilled workers can reduce wastes, identify inefficiency, fix process problems to increase quality and help improve company profit because they can. Of course they must be motivated, stimulated, and encourage to think creatively and work in an environment that support this kind of thinking. This forces manager to be more facilitative than control.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is with the critical shortage of skilled workers, these workers can easily find new job elsewhere and companies cannot afford to lose them. The result has been a shift in the balance of power from manager to worker. A company owner said: \u201cIf things do not work well, the first person to get fired is the manager not the workers. In this highly competitive market, we need skilled workers to survive. It is very expensive to replace skilled workers and it is difficult to find them.\u201d In an interview with newspapers, a manager complained: \u201cManagers today are no longer important, especially in technology industry where the stars are developers while the manager is only a support role. If managers do not know how to change, they will not be able to keep their job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the emergence of skills, innovation and efficiency as new factors, the principle of management is still unchanged. Their role is still to get the best results for the company. It is mainly about how they change the way they manage to focus more on the development of skilled workers to reach maximum performance. That means managers must support and encourage workers but they still need to retain certain degree of control over what is done to maximize efficiency. To do that managers need to change their way from reviewing documents, checking budget, monitor spending, to conduct employee training, appraising, rewarding, promoting and create an highly innovate work environment. The \u201cNew manager\u201d is expected to conduct job analysis, identifies skill needs and recruits best workers, provide training, appraise their performance, compensate them according to their skills, provide incentives, communicate, and build employee commitment to the overall goals of the company. At the same time, they must attempt to reduce turnover, improve retention and eliminate waste processes to increase efficiency in the way company operates.
