World class universities<\/p>\n

This year, The Times World University Rankings listed 200 \u201cWorld class\u201d universities based on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international reputation. Among the top ten universities in the world, seven are in the U.S (California Tech., Harvard, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton, Univ. Berkeley and University of Chicago) and three are in the UK (Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College). Among the top fifty best universities in the world, again the U.S is still dominated the list. In this ranking, CMU is ranked as 21th.<\/p>\n

The Times noticed that in the past few years, several Asian universities (China, South Korea, Singapore and Japan) are moving up. For example, Seoul National University jumped to 59th place from 124th. However the growth is still relative. The highest-ranked Asian is the University of Tokyo, is only at No. 27. It is expected that it may take several more years for Asian universities to catch up with U.S and Europe although most Asian countries are increasing their spending for education in recent years.<\/p>\n
