New trend in India: Shortage of IT workers<\/p>\n

According to an Indian government report, Indian companies are having difficulty to find skilled workers because it runs out of them and this trend will continue to intensify. A government officer said: \u201cThe good time is over, we cannot grow anymore since we do not have enough skilled workers. Every company is facing problem of finding skilled workers. The situation will get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is difficult to imagine that a country with over a billion people can be depleted of skilled workers. Among the industry with the highest shortage is Information Technology (IT) where it needs several hundred thousand workers but only found few thousands. An education officer explained: \u201cIndia has over 26,500 colleges and universities, both private and public, which is more than any country in the world. We have over 15 million students in school today and we are planning to have 40 million by the end of this decade. We have a plan to have more graduates than any other country in the world.\u201d But a college professor disagreed: \u201cIt is a wrong solution; they focus on quantity instead of quality. They allow more schools to open without any control. Some private schools are nothing but \u201cdegree for sale business\u201d. These schools are operated by business people with the goal of making money not educate students. They hire unqualified people with no credential to teach. They promise good jobs then produce graduates with no skills and worthless degrees. Having more schools is not a good solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Association of Software and Services Company (NASSCOM) admitted that current IT skills of workers are no longer the same as it was several years ago. Indian education system produces over 500,000 IT graduates a year but less than 20% of them are employable, the rest is not qualified to work. The problem is as demand increases, more schools are opened to meet demand but since there is no government control or oversight, quality goes down. Many students cheat, buy tests answers on the Internet, have someone to do homeworks for them because all they want is a degree so they can get good paying job.<\/p>\n

A foreign manager complained: \u201cWe have been outsourced software to India for more than ten years but I never see something like this. Today many IT graduates are deficient even in basic programming. Many of them copied each other\u2019s programs and cheated on tests. They all graduate with degrees but have no skills. Without skills they cannot get job and that is why there are so many unemployed workers even India has a shortage of workers. Since we cannot find skilled workers in India anymore, we are moving to other places such as Malaysia and Indonesia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently Indian government is pouring money into a skills development program to help train 60 million workers but they cannot find enough qualified people to teach. A government officer lamented: \u201cWe should have plan to train teachers first; we should have thousand qualified teachers before starting to train million students. We should have policies to control private schools to ensure quality. In the past ten years, we were hurrying to produce more workers to meet demand. We are reacting instead of planning and make mistake by having many workers without properly trained them. Now we do not know what to do with them? We have million of angry young people without job. As the economy is beginning to slow down; as foreign companies are beginning to move elsewhere; as good jobs are beginning to disappeared, we are facing a uncertain situation as things are happening so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
