Today, mobile phones and smart phones are devices that most people use to access the web. With over 4 billion mobile phone users, the whole industry is shifting quickly to a mobile-centric computing world. If you are Computer Science or Software Engineering students, you should learn more about mobile phone development to keep up with this trend.<\/p>\n

Global companies, large and small, are shifting to a mobile-centric way of doing business and allow workers to access company\u2019s computer systems to work via their own mobile devices instead of using personal computer. The so-called \u201cBring Your Own Devices\u201d (BYOD) is forcing a fundamental change in business as people; both employees and customers are increasingly using their own mobile devices for all types of work.<\/p>\n

Currently, the mobile industry is fragmented by several platforms (IOS, Android, Blackberry Symbian, and Window 8) which require a new approach to handle this trend. Since each platform has its own rules, characteristics and technology, each of them must be carefully considered.\u00a0 Today iPhone maybe the popular smart phone but Android offers more apps and Blackberry still have a number of loyal customers.\u00a0 With the introduction of Window 8, a new platform that allows the same user interface with personal computer. It is difficult to determine which will be the dominant platforms.<\/p>\n

Mobile development can be \u201copen\u201d or \u201cclosed\u201d. For example Apple is a closed system with significant quality controls. Mobile developers must follow Apple rules and use Apple-approved tools to ensure their applications have high level of quality and good user experience. The Android OS is an open system where developers have many tools and approaches depending on which handset manufacturers they want to build for. Android has more users but do not have strict control so quality can easily be compromised with more hackers and cyber attacks.<\/p>\n

Mobile apps market allows developers to create their own apps and sell them via App stores. According to a study, last year consumers have downloaded about 2.5 billion from app stores and this rate is expected to reach 5 billion in the next two years. Apps development opens many opportunities for software developers all over the world. They can either build apps for sale in local market or global market. However, unless you have a \u201cKiller-app\u201d like Angry Birds that have billion downloads, making apps and sell them through app store may not make you rich because there are so many of them. According to a study, most app developers only make about $1000 to $30,000 dollars per app. Today there are fewer games apps than last year as more people are switching to m-Health apps, m-Commerce apps, m-Government apps and m-Marketing apps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
