Develop soft skills<\/p>\n

\u201cSoft-skills\u201d are interpersonal skills such as communication skills, teamwork skills, organization skills, leadership skills, decision making skills, problem solving skills etc. Many students, especially technical students, often focus on technical skills but do not pay attention to soft- skills – that is a big mistake. Both technical and soft-skills are important in the workplace. Basically in the first ten years of your careers, technical skills are important, but after that you need soft-skills more because technology will change and you may not be able to keep up with it. As you advancing your career to higher level in company, you will rely more on your soft-skills than technical skills.<\/p>\n

Most colleges do not teach soft skills or only mention briefly about them. Without proper training and practices, students may not be able to develop these skills. For example, it takes time and a lot of practices to develop teamwork skills but these are skills that most companies require from students when they enter the workforce. You may have good technical skills but if you cannot get along with others, you will not keep your job for long. Many companies believe that workers with good soft skills can be trained for a technical position but someone with only technical skills would be difficult to learn soft skills because they cannot be developed in a short time.<\/p>\n

There are soft skills that are more important to certain companies than others. For example, communication skills are very important in business companies as contact with customers is the main activity. There are certain soft-skills that are important when you start to work. For example, teamwork is very important in technology company as collaboration and sharing information are main activities. There are certain soft-skills that are important when you move up in your career. For example, leadership and organization skills are important for management positions.<\/p>\n

Student often asked: \u201cIf there are many soft-skills, which one should I focus to develop now?\u201d I believe communication skills are important for every student. Many students think communication is the ability to talk or to present but it goes beyond the ability to have a conversation with another person. It is about being able to express something in a clear, concise and coherent manner. It is not just talking but also the ability to listen carefully. Currently, most communication trainings are focusing on presentation skills or conversation skills but not much on listening skills. It is important to learn how to listen carefully and think before you speak.<\/p>\n

Another important skill is the ability to get along and work collaboratively with others. Teamwork is about trusting and supporting other team members. Many technical people do not like to work in team because they think that they can do everything by themselves. Some want to be a \u201chero\u201d, or get recognized personally but they never succeed. In this complex world, no one can work alone. Teamwork needs time to develop so students need to build this skill as early as possible. I often assigned students to work in team when they enter their first year in college. By the time they graduate, at least they have four year of experience working in team.<\/p>\n

Other important skills are organization and time management skills. Organization means the ability to plan, to prioritize and to follow a process to get the work done. Many students often start with an activity then jump to another before they even finish the first one. In the end they may start many but never finish any. To help develop organization skill, I often require students to develop a list of daily tasks and prioritize them. Each time they finish a task, they put a check mark next to it. They cannot start the next activity until they finish the previous one. Time management means the ability to do work effectively and efficiently and not waste time on unnecessary activities. This skill requires planning and scheduling daily activities and follows that accordingly. I recommend student to develop a daily schedule with time to go to classes, time to study by themselves, time to study with team, and time to relax. For each hour in class, they need two hours to study by themselves and one hour to study with team. They also need at least 6 to 7 hours to sleep each night and one hour to relax in solitude.<\/p>\n

Problem-solving skills require students to think and analyze the problem carefully before develop solutions. Once a problem has been identified, they must develop at least three solutions then discuss with the team to select the best one. Many students hurry to focus on solving problem rather than analyze it and often make mistake because they do not understand the problem well. By asking them to come up with three solutions, it forces them to analyze the problem more careful and approach problems with different perspectives.<\/p>\n
