Listening Skills<\/p>\n

Among communication skills, listening skills are the least mentioning and the most difficult to learn because it requires a lot of efforts. Probably it is the reason why listening skills are rarely taught in soft-skills training.<\/p>\n

Students often asked: \u201cWhy do we need listening skills? We understand what people say just like we know what you say in class.\u201d I explained: \u201cSome of you may hear me talk but your mind maybe somewhere else. That is only hearing but NOT listening. When you meet friends, you all talk about many things but after awhile how many of you are still really listening to the conversation? And how many are switching your attention to something else? Most people\u2019s attention is usually short and easily gets distracted by other thoughts so you are no longer listening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many people think presentation skills or conversation skills are the most important but I believe the best way to gain respect from others is the ability to listen. If you attentively and carefully listen to a person talk, you will learn much more about what he wants to say as well as his intention and his wishes. You will go beyond words, beyond phrases, because you completely understand what he wants to expresses. A customer will respond positively when he feels like he is truly being “heard” and \u201cunderstood\u201d. An employee will feel comfortable and being appreciated when he know that the manager pay attention to what he says.<\/p>\n

Listening are skills that can be learned and with practice they can help anyone become an accomplished professional and effective leader. Listening requires that the listener is focusing on the conversation fully and do not have any distraction. It is also important to remain active in the conversation by occasionally asking questions to clarify a point. The reason that listening is difficult because the key to be a good listener is empathy or the ability to identify with and understand other people feelings. Empathetic listeners not only listen to what others are saying but they also try to feel what they are feeling. This requires a genuine attitude toward the others and listening to what they are trying to convey. If you do not care about them than it would be difficult for you to listen carefully to their concern. Keeping eyes contact is also important when you are listening, if you occasionally look at your watch than it gives the impression that you are not interested in what other has to say.<\/p>\n

For a lengthy conversation, a good listener should occasionally take notes by write down few key words or phrases to keep track of important things. The ability to listen to others is one of the most important advantages a good manager can possess. In addition to becoming an emphatic listener, managers can facilitate an open working environment where employees are freely express their opinions to management. Managing people is a difficult position and learning how to be a good listener is an ongoing process but with practice, it can make effective leadership appear effortless.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
