Today it costs a lot to go to college and the increasing costs have many parents worried about the real value of a college education. Especially there is a booming business in opening private schools with all types of degrees just to make money in every country. Even in Asia where education has been a tradition, parents are beginning to worry about the value of a college education and the future of their children.<\/p>\n

From the investment view, there is data that a college education is valued much more than a high school. The U.S. government census bureau estimates that over a lifetime, a college graduate earn twice as much money as a high school graduate. Compared with the cost of attending college for four years, it is clearly that college education is a good financial investment. College graduates also have other benefits in addition to the financial earning. The Institute for Higher Education published a report that college graduates often have higher levels career satisfaction; better chance of getting good job; make better decisions in life; are mostly open minded, and usually provide better life for their children. The Medical Association also reported that college graduates are often more healthier than high school graduates. There is a strong positive correlation between completion college and good health, not only for themselves but also for their children.<\/p>\n

Today the global economy is increasingly driven by technology with workers came from all over the world and works are distributed to many countries instead of concentrate in one place. These changes require new thinking, new skills, and a major shift in what is taught and how it is taught in colleges. Instead of the traditional education that develop graduates who know many things broadly, modern colleges are now focusing on develop graduates who specialize in a field with deep knowledge. An industry representative said: \u201cFor all future jobs, students will need more than just knowing little bit of everything or just how to use computers. In this fast changing world, students must have special skills in both technology and business and be able to work in team. It will require different training methods and different way of learning.\u201d A technology executive added: \u201cWe need workers that are creative thinkers and problem solvers. They must be adaptable with a strong motivation to continue learning new things as much as they can do.\u201d In this global world, competition will be fierce among graduates who come from all over the world and without a good education and preparation; many will not be able to compete.<\/p>\n

In this information age, college education is the foundation of the economy as knowledge is the asset for growth. Therefore education is often being blamed for economic problems. When workers do not have certain skills, their lack of proper education usually gets the blame. In some cases because education systems are slow to change but in other, it is the disconnection between what college taught and the industry need. Basically, education play a critical role in making some countries more competitive by teaching what is needed versus what the school wants to teach. With the advancement of technology, most future jobs require a college degree in STEM fields (Science, technology, Engineering, and Math) so selection of what to study is a critical determination for future job placement and career advancement.<\/p>\n

As technology is changing fast, education system is also evolving quickly. Today, as students enter U.S. college, they will notice that beside some traditional courses there are several new courses such as entrepreneurship and soft skills. This will allow graduates to have more choices in their future and be more competitive in this global competitive environment.
