Learning from Failure<\/p>\n

A young teacher asked me: \u201cI like the \u201cLearning by Doing\u201d method and think about using it but I do not want to fail. I do well with current lecturing method so I am still uncertain about changing to another method. Do you have any suggestion?<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cTeaching a new method or new thing is always risky. Every time we do something new there is a chance that it may not work. Most teachers avoid failure by not taking risks so they are always doing what they know well. But by continue to do the same thing, they may also fail but do not know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teachers would share success stories but not failures. Failure in classroom is considered a \u201cpersonal\u201d thing and often kept quiet. By not sharing what work and what does not work, teachers do not learn from mistakes therefore do not know how to improve their teaching. Of course, learning from failure is not easy. It is embarrassing and sometime shameful so many teachers do not want to talk about their failures, some even ignore the failure.<\/p>\n

Few years ago, I failed in teaching an advanced computing class. It was the first time I had taught the course, the materials were new and the concept was difficult. Most students did not like what I asked them to do. There were several problems in exams and homeworks, some students were angry and confused but I could not resolve the problem. I tried to apply every techniques and methods that I knew but the problems were still unsolved. I spent several months in agony with my teaching ability and suffered it personally. By the time the class ended, I vowed that I never teach parallel computing again. But by doing it, I never faced the lessons that I could learn. Today when I think about my failure, I feel sorry that I did not learn how to resolve this problem.<\/p>\n

As teachers we have to deal with failure like students too. We have lots of emotion during that critical time and we suffer like students too. To learn from failure, we need to put everything in perspective. Of course it is difficult at that time but few weeks or few months later, when thing is calm, we should look back and ask ourselves what happened and start thinking about what we might learn from the experience.<\/p>\n

We all have students who experience failures. For every exam, homework, there are students who do not do well. They suffer greatly, confuse and embarrass. As we sit across from them, we should understand their emotion state so we can give them suggestions to improve. I often listen carefully to their explanations and as long as they know the reason and what to do better I like to encourage them for learning from their failures. I tell them: \u201cIt is fine to make mistake in school so you do not make the same mistake in life. The worst thing could happen to you in school is a bad grade but in life, it could be more severe, as it could be your money, your reputation, your career, and even your life.\u201d Instead of issue a warning or a low grade, I often ask them if they want a second chance to make up as they already learned from their failure.<\/p>\n

Maybe the same thing should happen to us too. When dealing with our own teaching failures, we may want to ask our students what can we do better and by listening to their suggestions we may learn new thing so we can do better the next time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
