The business students’ dilemma<\/p>\n

During the financial crisis in 2008, a business professor lamented: \u201cWith bad publicity from the news media and public opinion, no one would want to be financial analysts, Bankers, Stock market traders anymore.\u201d As he had predicted, enrollment in business school in the U.S and Europe drop significantly but surprisingly in Asia it was still increasing, many students still want to study banking or finance. In an interview with a western TV station, a young woman said: \u201cIt is the best\u00a0job because we can get dress nicely and work in air conditioned offices\u201d. It seems that these students were not aware of what was happening or not paid attention to the changing market.<\/p>\n

Since 2009, the financial sector all over the world continues to decline. The industry confirmed that there were over half million unemployed financial and business workers. A survey by the Career Services Council (CSC) of Business schools in America, Canada and Europe found that most companies are laying-off people in the investment banking, stock brokerage, investment management and commercial banking sectors. This creates a big impact for students in business schools. For example, in 2008 investment banking and financial services hired nearly 85% of MBA graduates but in 2012 it was less than 1%. A school officer admitted: \u201cWith many unemployed business graduates and hundred thousands of experienced financial workers are still looking for job, it would be very difficult to get in this market. I would not recommend students to study business, finance or banking at this time. Even if the economy improves, it would take at least ten more years to absorb all the existing unemployed workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, the problem reached Asia where government reported that the highest unemployment graduates was in business and finance. China, S. Korea and Japan reported that 82% of their business graduates could not find job and their future look bleak because there will be more business students that will graduate in the next few years. A government official admitted: \u201cWith several thousands of them could not find jobs today, there will be several hundred of them coming in the next few years and we do not know what to do with that.\u201d The question is: \u201cWhy enrollment in business in the U.S and Europe has been declined in the past four years but not in Asia? Why universities continue to enroll more business students knowing that their future will not be good? According to a Hong Kong Newspaper: \u201cMost Asian students do not pay attention to global events. They do not know how to anticipate what happen in the global market. Many enrolled in business areas based on the family expectation or parents\u2019 advices; many parents know about local market and not global market or globalization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current question is with sources of employment is drying up, where will business-school graduates find jobs? There is only one area left: The government sector. A business school professor said: \u201cFew years ago, no business students would even consider working for government because low paid and no career advancement but today it changes. This is the only sector that is still hiring business graduates. There are areas dealing with financial fraud, identify companies that do not pay tax and a lot of review paper in government offices dealing in regulatory policy and risk management.\u201d<\/p>\n

However not every business graduates are happy with government work. A MBA graduate complained: \u201cWe do not spend six years in university and end up tangled in bureaucracy agencies. We are not trained to deal with wide-scale paper work and so many unproductive meetings.\u201d However many business students are becoming receptive with lower salaries and having government jobs is still better than no job. A business student admitted: \u201cNowadays we cannot afford to be so choosy.\u201d<\/p>\n

While business graduates are fighting for fewer positions in job market, others are exploring new ways of using their degree to make positive contribution to growing area. Thus, number of business graduates enrolling in information technology sector is increasing fast. The Career Service Council’s report found that 37% of business graduates are going back to school and study Information System Management. A business graduate said: \u201cWe already have all the required business courses and we only need few technology courses than we can get jobs in the technology sector. With the critical shortage of workers in this area, we have better chance of building a good career instead of having no hope for the future. Most technology organizations lack the experience of managing and organizing activities but today they receive a lot of help from these business graduates.<\/p>\n

Another area that business graduates pay attention is the increasing number of technology startups. These startups all have technology idea and innovation but lack of management and marketing knowledge. \u00a0By having business graduates and technology graduates working together it could create a powerful alliance that open more opportunities for graduates. A U.S school official said: \u201cMany business students are still trying to figure out what to do. But we found a good match for them by train them in entrepreneurship and match them with our technology students. It is a powerful combination. This is a new area that needs to be explored as it has opened a lot of doors for them. If anything I would say their feeling about being entrepreneurs give them a lot of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
