Working for a startup<\/p>\n

A computer graduate wrote to me: \u201cMy uncle started a company few years ago. His company did well and grew to seven hundred people and he wanted me to work for him. I know startup often issue stocks option to employees and I could earn a lot of money. Is there any disadvantage to work for a startup that I do not know? Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: A startup that grows to seven hundred people and be profitable is no longer a startup but an established company. If you want to join that company just to make a lot of money than your chance is probably not very good.<\/p>\n

You want to make decision on the hope that if you have stock options then you can make a lot of money. As an employee, you may receive stock option but the amount is probably not much. The owners of company and investors probably would have most of it. They may be willing to give stocks to employees but with seven hundred workers, your share may not be as much as you expected. You also assume that after the company\u2019s Initial Public Offering (IPO) the stock will go up for several years as you have to vested your stocks (cannot sell it) for at least three to five years.<\/p>\n

I do not want to disappoint you but you must be realistic. If you want to \u201cmake a lot of money\u201d you have to start your own company or join a startup as a co-founder not a software developer in a seven hundred person company. To join a startup and earn a lot of money, you must start early when the company is still small. You will have to work very hard and accept the risk of uncertainty because it is possible that the startup may not succeed. If you just want to have a job than working for startup is not a good choice. You should take a job that you feel happy going to work every day without worry too much.<\/p>\n

If you really want to make a lot of money then start your own company. Of course it is not easy but it would give you a better chance. You must be realistic about your motivation, your skills, your ideas and your passion to make a difference. As I often mention, most entrepreneurs who create startups are not going after the money, they want to pursue a passion and money come as a side effect later. I think working in a startup is an enormously rewarding experience where you will learn a lot. I often advice students to join a startup to learn NOT to earn as they will learn to work in team; learn to work hard; learn about the ups and downs of the market; and learn about competitions. Someday, after learning well then they can start their own startup.<\/p>\n

As a computer science graduate, you need to match your talents, knowledge, skills, ambition with the reality. Be realistic about the outcomes and ask yourself the question, \u201cAm I here to pursue a passion or to make a living?\u201d Only you can answer that question.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
