This is part 1 of a series of the Artificial Intelligence Engineering that we have at the Carnegie Mellon University. My name is John V\u0169, I am the Director of the Master Program in Technology Innovation and Artificial Intelligence. I am also the Distinguished Professor of Computer Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is part 1 of the lecture series. Let’s start of the Artificial Intelligence. Probably many of you have heard about Artificial Intelligence. Some of you may work in Artificial Imtelligence. Some of you may work in some related fields. But there are some a lot of noises and a lot of isues that I want to address in this first lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, let’s look at some interesting quotes about Artificial Intelligence or AI. For example, “Artificial Inteligence is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody knows how to do it, but everyone think everyone else is doing it.” The same thing is true that a lot of noise and a lot of talk about Artificial Intelligence. You can see that in multimedia, you can see in Facebook, you can see in Tweeter, you can see in all of kind of magazines. But with 45 years of experiences in the industry I can say that there are very few people who can do artificial intelligence correctly with significant results. I have been working on this field from many years. I am also the chief engineer of Boeing. And I am also the responsible for the Boeing 777. We have been collecting data, analyse data and use data for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another interesting quote that we see in the magazine is “You cannot tell if a machine has gotten smarter or if you’ve just lowered your own standards of intelligence to such a degree that the machines seem much more smarter.” There is a lot of fear about the Artificial Intelligence. People are afraid that some day the machine would get much smarter and can destroy humanity. I guess that many of you have seen the movie called the Terminator and something like that and you worried about the doomsday coming ahead. That aren’t sure. I don’t think it would happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The another issue about the Artificial Intelligence is the development of Artificial Intelligence could spell the doom for the human race. For example, a smart medical robot to treate cancer, can come up with the conclusion that the best way to obliterate cancer is to kill people who are genetically prone to the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yes, those are the hypotheses. But I want you to look into the Artificial Intelligence as a technique or a tool that we can use if we can use smarter and better. So in my point of view, I don’t think AI as something we shoud be afraid of. I think we have to look at the AI as a tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We have been using computers, we have been using many things if you look back in the history. When computers were invented, many people were afraid of that. Today almost everybody has a computer in their pocket. And they have been using it. Yes, there are a lot of notions about Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will take away the jobs of people. There would be some jobs being destroyed, gone away. But there are a lot of new jobs be created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So if you study Artificial Intelligence, if you study computers, threats are sure. You don’t have worried about that. But you have to put in your thingking brain about how smart you can be to beat the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So let’s start with some fundamental questions. What is Artificial Intelligence? Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that focused on the building a machine or computer that can simulate human intelligent behaviors. Whatever people can do, maybe that machine can also do. And maybe they can do it better. Most of the Artificial Intelligent systems can perform the tasks traditionally associated with human intelligence such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision making, and translation languages. And of course many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some computers with smart algorithms and software can perform certain things that people can do. They can plan, they can learn, they can reasoning, they can solve some problems, they can represent some knowledge, they can perceive something, they can identify motions, they can manipulate something to larger extend or less extend. And they seem to be smarter. However, we have something that machine can never replace. We have certain thing we call emotions, we have certain thing we call ethics, we have certain things we call moral. And I do not think these things the artificial intelligence can do that. So that are sure: Artificial Intelligence is the tool that we can use if we know how to use it smarter. But this is not something that would be able to replace a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another term that sometime can confuse people is the term algorithm. Let’s go back to the fundamental basic definitions of the algorithm. An algorithm is a process or a set of rules to be followed in calculation to solve problems by a computer. Everybody who study computer science understand algorithm, what it means. Sometime it also means a series of mathematical instructions created for the machine to follow. A step by step instruction for a computer to do. In an artificial intelligence system, a programmer creates an algorithm, that instructs the computer to look at some data, identify the problems, learn from all attempts to solve that problem, and eventually know how to solve the problem itself without being taugh, without being programmed and this is called machine learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So let’s look it into a next one. What do we mean by machine learning. Artificial Intelligence can be taught to carry a number of tasks without being specificly programmed. For example, many of you have used Apple’s Siri? Speech and language recognition? When I travel to certain country I used a Siri for some translations or ask for directions, purchase things in the restaurants. And sometime I used Siri I think it is very very interesting software to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today you heard a lot about the self-driving car. The vision-recognition systems in the self-driving car is also an Artificial Intelligence software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if you buy things online from Amazon, you can see the Amazon recommends certain products that maybe you are interesting in, and makes some recommendations. That is also an Artificial Intelligence based system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All of those algorithms, all of those software can learn or can be talked to do specific tasks based on the amount data that trains them. So the more data the better. Therefore a data is a key fundamental of artificial intelligence. The machine would not be able to learn anything without certain amount of data. So when we are talking about the amount of data, we are talking about a lot of data, a lot of data for the machine to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But data come in various forms. You have text data, you have voice data, you have image data, you have all kind of data. You have structured data, and you also have unstructured data. Therefore all those data have to be pre-processing, have to be cleaned up. Because with the noises without filting many of those data are meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So the last look, one of the key aspects that I do not think that receives much attention is I call pre-processing. And this is something I do want all of you who learn in artificial intelligence need to pay more attention. Because most of the data today are incomplete, inconsistence, errorness, redundancy and uncertainness, lacking of a certain trained behaviour. Therefore gathering data, collecting data, in many many places are ussually loosely. People collect all types of data in which results all kind of problems that every artificial intelligence projects are facing today. There because the data coming in missing something important and missing some trends, missing some values. Therefore if they are not carefully screened and filtered the problem can be very very misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are lot of irrelevent data and redundant data. I worked on airplanes, I have seen, for example, on the wings of the airplane we put 20 thousand sensors. All sensors is collecting data from vibrations, from air flows, from all kind of things on it. And because there are so many of them that all of kind of redundancy. So you really have to do some pre-filtering to make sure that the data you collect are properly labelled, are properly calculated and giving you as clean as possible for the machine to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Durring the training phase of any machine it is very very important to have a good data with good label and good content. So you can perform the machine learning much much better accurate and giving you a high reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Data pre-processing is really a data mining technique to transform all these raw data into some understandable formats that you can design. So labelling the data is very very important. Usually a data pre-processing is including cleaning, selection, normalization, transformation and feature extraction and selection.
