What newly graduates need to know<\/p>\n

According to a global industry survey in 2012, many college graduates may not be as ready for the working world as they think they are. The survey found that 55% of graduates who are applying for jobs are only “somewhat” prepared for success but 42% of graduates are “not prepared at all.” The key complain is the majority of students only know what they are taught in school but nothing more. A senior executive said: \u201cIf they do not read more and know more about the working world, they may not go very far. Today, the whole world is changing as everything is connected but almost half of them know nothing about this. Either they are na\u00efve or they just do not care. Without the knowledge about this changing world and the way business is conducted globally, they will never advance past entry-level jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the survey, most companies expect students to have a broader knowledge about the world\u2019s market (rank number 1); technology trends (rank number 2) Business trends (rank number 3) but most students have no idea what is happening outside of their own academic world or their own country. Despite a widespread of the Internet and social media, most students do not pay much attention to worldwide events, global market trends, or business trends but only read about fashion trends, movies stars, and their scandals or gossips. A school counselor lamented: \u201cStudents are interested in these types of news because those are what their friends are talking about in school. To them getting access to the internet and using social media is like ‘gossip\u201d as many do not know how to use them for their advantage. They are blinded by products advertising and life style marketing. Young students are NOT properly guided to use the Internet and turning them into useful knowledge.”<\/p>\n

The survey also lists skills that graduates must have. The most important are Problem-solving (ranked as number 1), Collaboration (rank as number 2), Critical thinking (Rank as number 3), Communication (Rank as number 4), and Persuasive writing (Rank as number 5). A senior executive said: “Companies need people who can collect, synthesize information and apply it to solve business problems. We are not hiring newly graduates who do not have that ability. Technical skill alone is not enough to advance in their careers. Today we expect all graduates to read more and have a comprehensive knowledge about what is going on in the world. They must understand industry trends as well as business trends to make good decisions. It means they must read as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The survey results reflect a new direction for entry-level hires. Not long ago, newly graduates can easily joined companies with the understanding that many skills like market trends, global market, problem-solving and critical thinking were to be learned on the job and develop over time. Now, companies want graduates who apply for the job must come in with these abilities. The majority of job interviews will have questions cover these requirements. The way business responses to the global change has accelerated to the point where expectations are much higher than in the past as many graduates are competing for much fewer opening positions now. Today most companies are not limiting their hiring in one country but they are hiring from a vast pool of graduates from many countries so competition is fierce.<\/p>\n

And whose fault is it if most college graduates have not got what it takes to be successful? The industry survey overwhelmingly believes that academia has failed to keep up with the pace of change in the business world and more than three-quarters (77%) of companies blame schools for new graduate\u2019s lack of readiness. An executive said: \u201cIf schools do not teach students to have broader knowledge of what is happening, we should not hire students from those schools. There are many knowledgeable graduates that we can select from all over the world.
