Introduction<\/p>\n
This paper proposes the encoding of two diacritical marks used in the Ch\u1eef N\u00f4m script to indicate alternate readings of H\u00e1n characters (ch\u1eef H\u00e1n). These marks (d\u1ea5u) are collectively referred to in Vietnamese as c\u00e1-nh\u00e1y, from the terms for the two most common marks, c\u00e1 \u4e2a (variant: ) and nh\u00e1y\ufffd.<\/p>\n
Ch\u1eef N\u00f4m is composed roughly of two types of ideographic characters: characters borrowed directly from Chinese (ch\u1eef H\u00e1n) and characters created in Vietnam to represent native Vietnamese words (ch\u1eef N\u00f4m)1 . Figure 1 provides a convenient overview and further break down of this scheme2 .<\/p>\n
The borrowed characters, ch\u1eef m\u01b0\u1ee3n H\u00e1n, were used to write the many words imported from a dialect of Middle Chinese, with original meanings and readings adapted into a Vietnamese standardization of that dialect (called H\u00e1n-Vi\u1ec7t or SinoVietnamese, SV). They were also used without modification to represent native words and sounds….<\/p>\n
