A person wrote to me: \u201cI read your blog but find that what you wrote may be good for people who live in advanced countries like the U.S. or European but NOT helpful for developing countries where most people are still working in labor manufacturing and agriculture. Could you write something more suitable for our people?<\/p>\n
I wrote back to him: \u201cToday manufacturing and agricultural facilities are becoming more depending on technology that can improve efficiency and productivity. Automation is the rule and sooner or later, all manufacturing facilities will use technology regardless of where they are located. As I have traveled in many developing countries, I saw that their manufacturing industry is rapidly changing as robotics and automation have become more prevalent, and most jobs are about managing and operating those automated systems instead of relying on manual labor. There is an urgent need for any country to develop more technical workers with the ability to maintain and operate these sophisticated systems.<\/p>\n
All technical workers must be taught the certain knowledge of machines, electronics, and control systems to work in these automated facilities. They need skill training in industrial automation technology, combining the fields of machine maintenance and electronics. A typical technician job may include installing, inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic components. Some workers can work to install robots, machining, electrical systems, hydraulics, welding and solving problems following the instructions and guidelines in schematic diagrams. Most technicians work alongside mechanical, electronic, and software engineers in manufacturing facilities.<\/p>\n
Some countries that have been relying on manual labor for years such as China and India are also rapidly using automation and robotics technology to stay competitive. I have seen fully automated factories in Shenzhen and Shanghai with thousands of robots working but only a few technical workers. At the same time, I also saw a lot of unemployed manual labor workers lost their jobs with no hope and no future because they did not know what was coming or did not expect that things can happen so fast.<\/p>\n
According to a recent study, demand for global industrial machinery mechanics is expected to grow more than 40 percent between 2017 to 2020. Nearly 30 percent of those jobs will require a four-year college education, and 40 percent require at least a two-year Associate degree. Only 30 percent require a high school education. Today there is a shortage of these technical workers and every company is complaining that they cannot get their open positions filled fast enough.<\/p>\n
My question is knowing what is happening in the world as well as the future jobs are, what should you do?<\/p>\n
