The fear of test<\/p>\n
In the last few years, I have more Asian students in my class than previous years. On the first day of class, when talking about the course curriculum and requirements, I noticed the anxiety among many Asian students. Most U.S. students often asked a few questions to clarify their understanding, but Asian students remained worried about the number of tests in my course. The common questions are: “Why so many tests in this course?” “What happens if I fail the test?” “What grade can I get if I fail several tests?” “How many tests should I do well to pass this course?<\/p>\n
In traditional education systems where there are many tests, the fear of failure has been ingrained in students’ psyche. After many years of schooling, many students develop a chronic “fear of tests,” and that fear impacts their ability to learn. Many Asian students told me that they could not concentrate during tests, no matter how hard they study. One student explained: “After the test when leaving the classroom, I know all the answers, but during the test, I cannot think at all.” Another student lamented: “I am so emotionally distressed, and begin to blame myself during the test.” I also noticed that even the best students sometimes did not do well because they put so much pressure on themselves without realizing that such a hard-working habit can decrease their performance.<\/p>\n
When students fail a test or receive a low grade, they lose confidence in their learning abilities. Teachers who have many low-scoring students also feel uncomfortable for not doing a good teaching job. How do we solve this “fear of test” issue? In my class, I told the students: “Many Professors have two tests during their courses, a midterm and a final. Some only have one, so either you pass or fail. However, in my course, we will have a test every two weeks, so you will get used to it and not afraid of tests. Since all tests have the same amount of points, if you do not do well in one or two, it does not matter as in a semester of fifteen weeks, you have seven tests.”<\/p>\n
I also have a “Second chance” policy, if students cannot answer a question, they can put the symbol SC (second chance) next to the question so it will not be graded. They have one day to come back and redo that question, but the answer is only worth half of a given point. By doing this, most students tell me that they feel a significant relief as they do not have to worry about pass or fail. After a few times, most of them study well, and I do not have to deal with students using the second chance as most are focusing on learning instead of trying to pass the test.<\/p>\n
When I teach in Asia, many professors did not like this policy, and they criticized me: “You cannot do that, you make them become lazy and not study hard.” I told them: “What I want is for them to learn, if they do not learn well, they have to go back and learn again until they know it well. In the first few tests, about 25% of students are using the second chance to redo the questions, then it drops to 10%, but after five tests, I rarely have anyone using the second chance anymore because students are focusing on learning, not on passing the test.” A professor disagreed: “By doing that, students know the question, and all they do is to go back, find the answer and pass the test. That is cheating.” I explained: “What is the purpose of the test, to pass or fail students? Or to let them know what they know and do not know? If they do not know they have to study again until they know. When students are not worried about pass or fail, they feel comfortable to study, and they can focus to learn without the fear of test.”<\/p>\n
I believe teachers need to have a discussion with students about their anxiety problems and find ways to help them avoid the “fear of test.” Many students are often worried too much which impact their performance during the test. I often demonstrate a simple technique as follow: On the first test, when students received the test questions, I could see that many were feeling stressful because the questions were hard. I let them felt the pressure for a few minutes then said: “This test is just for you to evaluate yourselves on how well you learn, please relax as it will not be graded.” You can see the whole class breathing out calmly as there was no more pressure. But to my surprise, almost all students did well on this difficult test, because they did not worry anymore.<\/p>\n
Many Asian students often had anxiety about tests when they started my course, but over time, that feeling tends to dissipate, and only a few consistently experience high emotions that hinder their ability to learn. I often sent an email to them to ease their apprehension such as: “I just wanted to send a quick note to some of you about the upcoming test, please focus on …. ”\u00a0 As many of us are working toward understanding the causes of their stress and help them to overcome them, we will need to de-emphasize the pressure of test to help our students focus on learning so they can become lifelong learners.<\/p>\n
