The perfect idea<\/p>\n
Last week, in my entrepreneurship class, a student asked: “Is it possible to come up with a “Perfect idea” to start a company?<\/p>\n
I answered: “There is NO Perfect idea! An idea is a concept about something, but it needs to be validated by the customers. It must meet the customers’ needs, and they are willing to pay for it.”<\/p>\n
Student: “But how do we know that they will pay for it?”<\/p>\n
I explained: “You must go and ask them. But you cannot talk to them about an idea because nobody wants to hear an idea. They want to see what your idea can do for them or solve their problems. That is why you need a prototype or a “proof of concept” that demonstrate your solution to their problem. When you show your prototype to the customers, they may agree or disagree with it. If they like it, you can continue to build your product. If they do not like it, you must make a decision whether to continue with the idea or to change it, modify it, to what the customers want. The fact is\u00a0 your idea will change many times until it becomes what customers want. Many entrepreneurs love the idea so much and do not want to change, but they forget the basic rule of entrepreneurship: “No customers, No startup.”<\/p>\n
“An idea is only an abstract concept, and it needs to evolve many times by asking the customers, as many as possible, to make sure that everyone likes it then you can start your company. The fact is the idea requires a lot of changes until many customers like it and willing to pay for it. Successful entrepreneurs know how to improve and modify the product many times until it becomes the “perfect product.” Your idea right now is only a starting point for you to begin the “startup journey” you have not got to the destination yet. You need the idea to start so do not think much about how it will be in the future because the final product will be much different from the original idea. Most “perfect ideas” are nothing but an evolution of the first idea. There is no “Perfect idea” in the classroom, but how do you evolve that idea into something that the customers need and willing to pay for it is the\u00a0 “Perfect idea.”<\/p>\n
