Testing and Grading<\/p>\n
A few years ago, when I began to teach the “Advanced Data Analytics” course, I heard students asking: “Who should I take for “Advanced Data Analytics” ? Professor X or Professor Y?”, “Is it a difficult class?” or “Are there lot of tests in that course?”, “Are those test hard?” or even “Do you still keep these tests from that class, can I borrow?”<\/p>\n
I understand that students are afraid of tests and concerned about passing and failing. However, most tests are something students do once and then moves on to the next. Testing does not truly measure how they learn in an evolving learning process. Sometimes testing only measures how much students can memorize rather than how well they learn. The fact is learning is not a just a one time process, or either they know, or they do not, but an evolving process when they learn much more as they continue to learn, including learning from the mistake. I prefer to have the students make a mistake then learn from it because they would know it well.<\/p>\n
Many professors prefer to use “Definition” or the “What” questions in their test because it is easy to grade. For example, “What is Hadoop?” or “What is a Binary tree?” In my course, I prefer to use the “Why” and “How” questions to make sure the students understand the concept and be able to apply it. For example “Why coding is the most important skill in computer science?”, “Why do you need to learn algorithms?” or”How to find the distance between the farthest two elements in a binary tree?” When students cannot answer, I gave them a “second chance” by redoing the test questions again\u00a0within 12 hours\u00a0with reducing half points. As long as they are learning, they can still pass the test.<\/p>\n
Each week, I often begin the class by asking: “Tell me what you were learning in the course last week.” By listening to their answers, I can adjust the course contents to make sure that they are learning well. I like to start from simple questions to more complicated to make sure that what they have learned was not just a “shallow concept,” but a well thought answers. Of course, occasionally a student may say: “I do not learn much.” Then I asked: “So what will happen when you go to a job interview, and the Interviewer asked: “In your resume, you listed that you took “Advanced Data Analytics” that is a good course at Carnegie Mellon, so tell me about what you learn in that course?” You can see the face of that student.<\/p>\n
I often advise: “You are here to learn, you are responsible for your learning and you must take your study seriously. You should focus on the learning NOT grade and test. They are created to help you to know where you are in the learning process so you can adjust your studying. A test only helps you to check your strengths or weaknesses, what you know and what you do not know or how well you have learned. It is OK to make a mistake and learn from it, but it is not OK if you do not learn. I allow all of you to have a second chance to learn, do not worry about test or grade but focus on learning. The more you focus on passing the test, the less focus on what you will learn, and passing the test will become the goal rather than learning. My job is to help you to develop specific skills so you can apply in your career and your life, not teaching you the ability to pass tests. Being successful in today’s world requires more than an ability to recall some facts or data, but you must know how to solve problems using your knowledge.”<\/p>\n
