A foreign student wrote to me: “I am a second-year student studying Business Administration in the U.S. Since it is not a STEM area, I am worried that after graduation, I cannot stay and work here. What can I do to improve my chance to work in the U.S.? Please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Your student’s visa only allows you to go to the U.S. to study, NOT to work. In order to work after graduation, you will need a U.S. company to hire you and file an H1B application to allow you to work in the U.S. The H1B is a temporary visa for U.S. companies to hire foreign workers with highly specialized skills in “specialty occupations” that these companies need but could not find workers. Since there are many U.S students studying business administration, this occupation is not considered a high demand, or difficult to find workers, you may not qualify for the “specialty occupations” category.<\/p>\n
Today, in this technology-driven world, there is high demand for technology workers, and there is a shortage of them. If you can develop technical skills in these high demand areas, it is possible to find a job. It means either you change your major to Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, etc. or develop specialized skills in this areas. My advice is you may want to take a few computer courses to see if the field is something that you want to learn or not. By taking these courses, you can make better decisions about your future career as a business professional; it also distinguishes you from others because you have broader knowledge than the traditional business graduates to deal with challenges in the business world.<\/p>\n
