Yesterday, Professor Tanaka from TokyoUniversity came to visit Carnegie Mellon and had dinner with several faculty members. During dinner, the conversation turned into the topic of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Since he is a famous Robotics Professor, I asked: “We know that Robots is taking many jobs in both offices and manufacturing and continue to advance in other areas, is there anything that robots cannot do?”<\/p>\n
Professor Tanaka smiled and pointed at the dinner place: “There is no way robots can make sushi, we had tried many ways with all types of robots in our laboratory. Finally, we concluded that robots could not make sushi.” We all laughed, but he continued: “Japanese eat Sushi every day, and most are done by hand in restaurants. For several years, we tried to automate that, but we failed. Sushi is a small portion of rice, fish, pickles, and others, rolling in seaweed. It looks simple, but it is not. Rice, vegetables, fishes, and tofu are soft and irregularly shaped, they are also wet and difficult to grasp. Robots cannot even grasp it or roll it, no matter how much we have tried. We have worked for several years to get robots to do that but could not.”<\/p>\n
Another professor added: “It is good news that restaurant business and sushi cooks are safe from automation since robots could not take their job?”<\/p>\n
Professor Tanaka also laughed: “We can make robots to build houses, cars, even another robots. Robots can lift heavy equipment, moving things but they cannot do anything that requires agility such as cooking. Robots can be programmed to do the same thing thousand times, but they cannot be creative enough to modify things. Even with artificial intelligence, they can think faster and maybe better in chess games, but they cannot think creatively like an artist or musicians. They can draw thousands of the same pictures or even write music, but their music is a matter of pattern repeats a thousand times, but not creative enough for enjoyment. Robots can never be another Beethoven or Mozart. In a restaurant, robots can wash dishes, clean floor, but cannot cook. After all, who wants to have a meal cook by a robot? So I think anything that requires creativity and agility are\u00a0 safe from being automated.”<\/p>\n
Another professor argued: “But robots can be programmed to cook.”<\/p>\n
Professor Tanaka smiled: “Yes, the electric rice cooker is a “robots” who cook rice. If you put rice and water in, you will have cooked rice in fifteen or thirty minutes, but it is the same every time as it cannot change. The same thing in manufacturing, Toyota, and Honda have robots to build cars on the assembly lines. These robots can make the same cars all the time, but it did not work well because the car changes every few years.
