A First-year Computer Science student wrote to me: “What is the most popular programming language in the world? If I want to work overseas, which programming language do I need to learn? Please advise.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Based on the computer industry study, Python is the most popular programming language in 2016 and 2017. Today, Java, C, and C++are listed as number 2,3 and 4. In the U.S. and Europe, most universities are teaching Java as the official language in their computer science program. If you know Python and Java well, you can work almost anywhere in the world. The other popular programming languages, according to the computer industry ranking are C#, R, JavaScript, HTML, Go, Swift and Ruby.<\/p>\n
In my view, if you learn one programming language well, you can learn others quickly because after all, they are just instructions for the computer to do. Depending on the job that you are working, you may need to learn IOS or Android, if you develop mobile applications. You may need to learn about cloud computing platforms such as AWS or Azure and data science tools such as Hadoop, Apache Spark, to work for jobs in cloud computing or Big data areas.<\/p>\n
In order to get a job overseas, there is one more language you need to know: The English language, as it is being used in most places.<\/p>\n
