New technologies are emerging fast and impacting everything and change the way businesses operate.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, I visited Adidas AG&#8217;s speed factory near Munich, Germany where a manager told me that automation is the future of all manufacturing. He said: &#8220;We have 160 people control hundreds of robots as they make 1,500 pairs of shoes a day, or 500,000 shoes a year. We replace manual stitching and gluing with new machines that can create thousands of shoes in a matter of few hours instead of weeks and months as in Asia, where workers do it by hands. We can quickly make shoes, sports clothes directly from the designers&#8217; computers and bring them to the market in a few weeks instead of one year. Any new fashion that comes, we can have them readied in our store in a few weeks when they are still &#8220;hot&#8221; so we can capture the market quickly.&#8221; I asked: &#8220;Then what will happen to people who make shoes in Asia?&#8221; He answered: &#8220;After we have several &#8220;speed factory&#8221; established around the world, we will close other factories because robots are better, faster and cheaper than human.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For fifty years, IBM dominated the computer industry with offices located all over the U.S. But in the past few years, IBM has relocated most of its offices to India. Today, IBM employs over 150,000 people in India, and the number is still increasing. For many years, U.S. companies have been shifting works overseas to India, China, and Eastern Europe countries, but today IBM is employing more people in India than it does in the U.S. As IBM is hiring more in India, its number of employees in the U.S. has shrunk significantly. When I visited IBM office in Bangalore, a manager told me: &#8220;A few years ago, we outsource software works to India, but now we are moving here because there are more skilled workers here than any other countries. These workers do not just code and test software like twenty years ago, but now they are designing and building computer systems for large global companies like AT&amp;T, Shell. U.S. Banks and Finance companies. We will establish research labs in Artificial intelligence, computer vision, 3D printing and self-driving cars. By moving to India, we can keep our costs down. The salaries paid to Indian workers are about a third to a fifth of the U.S. workers so instead of bringing them to the U.S. as in the past, we are moving here. I asked: &#8220;Then what will happen to technical people who work for IBM in the U.S? He explained: &#8220;Many do not update their skills so what they know is no longer need, so we have laid them off. To compete with top technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple who can attract the new graduates, we must find new graduates with new skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Based on these observations, it is clear that automation will destroy many labor works and create high unemployment in countries where the economy is still depending on the &#8220;low-cost labor factor.&#8221;\u00a0 It also seems that with a restriction on immigration, and the shortage of skilled workers, many companies will have to relocate their technical works overseas. Although these trends are still evolving,\u00a0 they will influence what the future economy of a country could be. Whether the economy will prosper or flounder will depend on how they react to these changes. Today technology drives everything, change everything, and impact everything and to take advantage of this; the education system must change.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, a friend told me: &#8220;It would take a long time for the education system in my country to change. We have missed many opportunities, is it a hopeless situation? I told him: &#8220;There are public schools and private schools and the competition for students among them will be fierce. If the public schools cannot change then perhaps, the private schools will seize the opportunity by creating specific degree programs focused more on technology innovation and entrepreneurship. The key is that such programs should be taught by highly technical faculty members who understand the subject matter well and can convey the knowledge to students. To do that these schools will need to hire enthusiast teachers who are knowledgeable about different aspects of applying technology to solve problems. They need to change the teaching methods from lecturing to learning by doing. They need to change the attitude of students from passive learning to active learning.
