Reading skill for graduate programs<\/p>\n
A student wrote to me: “As a third-year college student in Computer Science, I am planning to continue my education for an advanced degree in the U.S. My English is good with TOEFL score of 110; my grade is also excellent (95\/100) I am working on the application to several universities. Is there anything else that I need to prepare?<\/p>\n

Answer: It seems that you are well-prepared for the challenge in U.S. School. My only advice is you may need to develop a good reading skill because it is an essential skill for studying in any Master and Ph.D. program where a lot of reading is required. I have seen many international students who came to study in the U.S. had difficulty because they did not have a good reading skill. Students who read well tend to have a wide range of words to communicate, as they read more, they have a better vocabulary to use in everyday life.<\/p>\n
Many students often confuse between reading skill and language skills, but reading is about focus and concentration to understand the materials. Having this ability will allow you to consume a lot of research papers in a relatively short time and help you to know more about your research. When you read, you have more time to think and develop a unique comprehension and insight into what you can do. By having knowledge of how things work, you can achieve much better success at any graduate programs (MS or Ph.D.).<\/p>\n
People are limited by what they know, the more they know about the worlds surrounding them, the more they will expand their understanding of what is possible and have this knowledge will allow them to innovate. Good luck on your journey to pursue the advanced degree in the U.S.<\/p>\n
