Yesterday, a student asked: “Is it possible for technology to impact a developing country where people do not use technology in their daily lives? If they do not use technology can they avoid the impact?<\/p>\n

I answered: “Technology impacts everything, regardless of whether people are using technology or not. But the impact could be fast or slow depending on whether it is a developed or developing country. For example, you may not think African countries would be using a lot of technology, but the fact is many African countries have more mobile phone users than some European countries because it is a matter of convenience where transportation is limited.<\/p>\n
Technology usage is everywhere, and you can find the evidence in the number of people in a country have a mobile phone. The number of people play video games, or the number of the household have a TV or a laptop, etc. But the impact of technology is much more than just consuming technology. For example, today automation is fast becoming a critical activity in many places for its benefits of reducing costs and increasing profits. And while automation may benefit the business, it will have a profound effect on employment.\u00a0 According to several studies, half of the works performed today by people could be automated using existing technology such as Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Therefore, the impact could be a devastating to many labor workers and the economy of several countries.<\/p>\n
The impact of technology is not happening gradually as many people believe but at a much faster pace. With automation in place, speed is the key. Many things that used to take weeks and months to do could be done in a matter of hours or days.\u00a0 This will accelerate the unemployment in many countries as machines are replacing human much faster than people think. Speed could also turn many markets into chaos as the\u00a0 pace of change in technology can move very\u00a0 fast, and businesses must keep up to stay competitive else, they will be eliminated.\u00a0 Today technology changes everything, and most companies realize that it is technology that impacts their business and having technical people is more important than having business people. There is a “quiet war” among companies to compete for talents as more technical professionals are evolving into key positions.\u00a0 Information Technology\u00a0 is no longer a supporting function but a strategic function in all successful companies.<\/p>\n
As technology becomes an increasingly important factor in businesses, companies are\u00a0 changing the way they look at these technical people and how they develop and maintain the competitive edge for them. Therefore the compensation for these positions is increasing fast. Today, many information technology workers are making the same salary as a recent graduate Medical doctor. The average salary of a Computer Science graduates in the U.S. is about $95,000 a year, but with specialties like Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Cloud Computing, they could command a salary of $150,000 which is the same as a recent graduate Medical Doctor.<\/p>\n
The impact of technology also increase the demand for more technical workers but there are not enough of them, and the shortage opens the door for the “open immigration” policy where technical workers can immigrate to work in another country. Despite all the negative news about immigration, many countries are still bringing in talents from another country to meet their need. Some government officers now called it “Selective immigration” to distinguish between “Workers that they need” and “People who want to migrate there due to other reasons.”\u00a0 As the talents are leaving the country for better opportunities elsewhere, several developing countries will be impacted because they do not have enough talents to improve their economy.<\/p>\n
