During my career planning activities in Asia, there was an issue of college students who did not have a clear direction and educational goals. When I asked: “Why do you go to college?” The typical answer was: “To get a degree.”\u00a0 I continued: “What are you doing with a degree?” Most students said: “To get a job.” I asked: “What happens if you cannot get a job?” Many responded: “Then we wait until we can find a job.” I challenged them: “How long would you wait? A few months or a few years? They answered: “We do not know, we keep waiting until we find a job.” I asked: “What happens if you still cannot find a job?” Their answer surprised me: “Then my parents will take care of me.”<\/p>\n
Today, the situation of\u00a0 “College graduates” who are still depending on their parents to support them is a major problem. That leads to frustration, despair, anger, and even shame for both parents and their children. Some people blame the over-caring parents; others criticize the lack of maturity of these graduates. There are many other reasons, but as a teacher, I think it has to do with the lack of career planning early between students and their parents. If the students do not understand the reason for going to college or their education goal is only getting a degree, then they will be disappointed. Today a degree is not a guarantee for a job. It is important for all students to understand the reason to go to college, what field of study they should select; what skills they must develop, and what they need to learn that allow them to build a future career. And this career planning should involve both the students and their parents.<\/p>\n
During the class discussion, several students told me: “My parents said do not worry about the future, just study, get a degree, and they will take care everything.”\u00a0 I explained: “Although your parents may say that, they expect that after graduation, you will be able to get a job and be able to take care of yourself. Then someday you can take care of them when they are old.” In the past, passing exams, and getting a degree is guaranteed for a position that lasts a lifetime, but today, it requires more planning to ensure students select the right field of study, and have the proper knowledge and skills to build a career. Without a career plan as a map, students will have difficulties in selecting a field of study, or know which skills that they need for them to find a job.”<\/p>\n
A few months ago, a mother wrote to me: “We do not know what to do, our son graduated five years ago, but could not find a job. He is living with us, we still have to give him money so he can go out with his friends but I do not know how long because we are old and poor.” It was a long email with desperate pleas for help. I wrote back to her: “Even you love him, you need to have a serious discussion with him about his future. If he cannot find a job related to his education, he should get any type of job that allows him to be independent. You may even need to stop taking care of him else he will continue to depend on you. This is a difficult situation because both of you are trapped in a pattern of stressful accommodation that continues to lead to more problems later.”<\/p>\n
I believe parents and children should discuss career planning as early as possible. The issue is many young people do not know what they want, and the parents do not have the knowledge about the job market trends to advise their children. In that case, the parents and the school career counselors should work together to plan for a career of the students BEFORE they even enter college. Every parent would like their children to get a good education to establish themselves independently. But to the immature young person who has been over-caring by their parents, the notion of being “on their own” is difficult. Parents need to set realistic expectations and be prepared to follow up with actions to “wean” them from being “too depending.”<\/p>\n
I recommend that parents discuss career planning with their children as early as possible. It is important to explain the reasons for them to plan in advance BEFORE they go to college. The key message is about the college education and their future, the optional fields of study (i.e., several choices) that their children could pursue. In the discussion, parents also need to listen to their children’s opinion and encourage them to make a plan. It is more important to make accommodations for them as it makes them feel safer and more comfortable. Career planning is a process that goes on for weeks and months, not just a one-time only. No one can make a decision in just one meeting, and no plan is absolute as things will change. For example, the job market may change; new technology may come; students may change their mind; parents may have additional information about the job market, etc. But as long as the parents and their children plan their career together in a practical manner, it may help reduce the number of college graduates overly depending on their parents to support them.<\/p>\n
