Planning the future<\/p>\n
To many students, the first few weeks of college are full of uncertainties and confusion as they do not know what to do in a new environment. Eventually, many will adjust well after attending classes and meeting new friends, etc. But this is also the time they must start thinking about what they want to learn in college. Taking classes is not enough as they must plan their career and know what they need to learn in college.<\/p>\n
It is common during the first year of college for students to think about meeting new friends, involving in school activities instead of the career they have after four years. To them, four years is a long time, and they think that they will have a lot of time to think about it later. However, without having the map to guide them, many often get sidetracked and make serious mistakes. As time passes quickly, some will find that their goal can vaporize and they will have to face uncertain future and unemployment.<\/p>\n
I always encourage new students to develop their career plan during the first year, so they have a roadmap to guide their studying. As college students, they must know what their interests are, what the job market requires, what skills they need in order to start on the right career path. Today, things change quickly; students must prepare for their future by knowing what career they want to pursue, plan their study accordingly, and focus on developing their skills, so they are readied whenever the opportunity comes.<\/p>\n
A few years ago, when teaching in Asia, I asked students to plan their career on the first day of class. Many students complained: “It is too early, why hurry?\u00a0 I told them: “When do you think is the right time?” They said: “Our parents say just study then they will take care of everything.” I asked them: “Are you incapable of taking care of yourselves? Are you an adult or a little child? Why do you have to depend on your parents to take care of you? A few students argued: “My parents will help me after I got the degree.” I challenged them: “What do you think they will do? Giving you a job? Paying your salary and choosing wives of husbands for you? Are you still living in the 14th or 15th century? What kind of person are you? Are you incapable of doing anything? I want to see each of you have a career plan by the end of the week and we will discuss that in the next class.”<\/p>\n
Even today, I think some parents still take care of their children to the point that they become overly depending on their support and become lazy, irresponsible, and spoiled. We are living in a competitive world where every student must be independent and have a lifelong learning attitude in order to thrive and succeed. Without proper guidance for them to be more responsible for themselves, many will blame their parents, teachers, or school for their failure.<\/p>\n
In the next class, I explained to them that the career plan is the “map” that helps them to explore their interests and think about what they can do in their lives. By looking at their strengths or what they do best will allow them to establish their goals and think about areas that they need to improve. By having the career map early, they can look at their college education as a journey where they learn knowledge and skills to help them reach their destination. By understanding particular difficulties that they must overcome and how taking some courses could improve their future, they will look at these courses as opportunities rather than requirements. As they progress in the learning journey, they can mature and become more responsible persons for themselves as well as their family.<\/p>\n
After several intense discussions, some students admitted that they had spent most of the time in high school feeling confused about what they wanted to do until now. One student said: “I just accepted what my parents told me without thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I did not do well in high school even I passed the exam to go to college, but now I believe that I could do better after you show me how to plan my career. I think my parents would be happy when I show them my plan as I do have a plan for my future.”<\/p>\n
I told them: “I am here to help you work through the confusion, and guide you toward the right career path on your personal journey. Without knowing where you are, what you want to do, you will not be motivated to learn, and your education journey is nothing but just passing some tests to get a degree. You must set your educational goals and work hard to achieve them because it is your lives, your future and no one can live your lives but you.”<\/p>\n
