For example, if they skip classes, miss tests, texting during lecture, or misbehave in class, they may get a low grade or fail the class. Most teachers often remind students about these rules, but why students still violate them? For many years, I have been thinking about this issue and find that as teachers, we are focusing on the “penalties” but not let them experience the consequences of their violations that prevent them from their learning goals.

For example, students are often get distracted by mobile technology (i.e., text messages, email, etc.), and many teachers forbid them to use these devices in class. But most students continue to violate this rule by keep texting or sending emails during class anyway. In my first day of class, instead of talking about forbidding the use of mobile devices during lecture, I divide the class into two groups. One group is allowed to text, send and receive emails, even watching the news or YouTube during the lecture. The other group must close all devices, including laptops. After the lecture, all students must complete a quiz based on the lecture’s materials. The result is clear: Students who could not use their mobile devices score much higher than the other group. I told the class: “If you want to do well in my class, you better not getting distracted by texting or emailing. You go to class to learn, but if you do not want to learn, why go to class?” Since then, few students would violate this rule because they experience and understand the consequences.

Some rules tend to be reactive to certain issues. For example, cheating is common among students who want to pass the test. Many teachers monitor the class during testing to prevent cheating. But students would create new ways to cheat, and this issue has been going on for many years. In my class, students who did not do well can repeat the test the second time. In my test, every question worth two points, but if they cannot answer, they can write “second chance.” That means they can retake that question on the next day, but at that time, the question is only worth one point. My view is students must learn something, if they do not learn during the first time, they should learn it the second time. As long as they are learning, it is fine with me. Because of this view; I rarely have to deal with the cheating issue. However, due to the competitive nature of the class; most of my students are studying hard because they want a higher grade. When they do not worry about” Pass or Fail.” they begin to focus on learning.

I believe that college students need to be more independent and responsible for their behavior and it requires different ways of educating them. I am willing to go beyond rules to allow students to learn from their actions. Threatening and punishment may not work well with some students. It may create fear and distrust as students believing that teachers do not care about them. By explaining the consequences of their misbehavior, providing personal advice and treat them like responsible adults would be a better solution. For example, for every homework, I would ask students how long would it take to complete and let the class vote on a date as an agreement. Since then I never have to deal with students who complain about not having enough time or turn in late homework. I told them: “It is you who are responsible for your learning. My job is only to guide and help you. If you do not study, your future career is at risk.” By allowing them to determine their own future, they are more likely to commit to studying because they understand the consequence.

I believe some rules, especially those with tough consequences (i.e., Fail the course, kick out of school, etc.) may create undesirable behavior as it punishes students instead of helping them to learn about their own responsibility. As teachers, we need to help students to mature and grow up to be responsible learners by encouraging positive learning behaviors. Teachers can spend the time to discuss their learning progress, help them to set educational goals and career planning. These activities can increase students’ learning and advances their development as independent and responsible persons.

When students skip class, instead of applying a strict rule, I show them their homework and test scores that demonstrate the correlation between the number of absences and their scores. When students see that they did not do well because of their absence, they understand the consequence of skipping class. This would teach them more about the importance of attending class than punishing them as some rules stated.

There are students who go to college without direction, and I often have a conversation in my office with each individual where we go over their reasons for going to school, plan their career, and explain their progress and educational goals. After these sessions, most students change their behavior to the better. Of course, after several conversations and advice without result, I told them: “You are wasting your time in my class because you will not learn much and will not pass the course. My question is: Why go to class if you are not learning anything?

I believe some rules are necessary but to develop students to mature and be responsible persons we need to take extra steps that allow them to learn from their actions because school is the “safe place” for them to learn before they will have to learn from the reality of life.

Mọi lớp đều có các qui tắc dùng như việc cảnh báo cho học sinh về điều sẽ xảy ra nếu họ không tuân theo …

[29

post-5542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-loi-khuyen-cho-giao-vien
["GET
