Supporting the students<\/p>\n
What can we do to help our students succeed and build a career that lasts a long time? This is one of the questions that I have been thinking for many years. Off course, to succeed students must study hard; to build a career; they need to have the skills and a lifelong learning attitude.<\/p>\n
Today, it is hard to maintain students’ attention when there are many things distract them from studying. To make sure that they will learn, I use class discussion to keep their attention to the teaching as well as learning from other students.\u00a0 Class discussion can bring out many interesting details that a lecture may skip. For example, a good question could make the students think deeper about a subject; a different opinion may motivate students to find out more. When students express their understanding of the course material, the teachers can verify whether they have learned well or not, and correct them when necessary. The teachers can also identify who is actively participate and who is not, and how many students are learning.<\/p>\n
Class discussion also forces students to come to class prepared instead of unprepared and passively listen to a lecture. By raising questions and let the students discuss, the teachers encourage dialogue among students which will lead them to think deeper and into more detail than just reading and memorizing. I often ask students to comment on what another student has said so they must pay attention to the discussion and not being distracted by other activities. Class Discussion can help students to develop their soft-skills. By asking questions, defend their position, or argue for a different solution, students can improve their communication and critical thinking skills.<\/p>\n
Today most good jobs require a college education in particular fields. According to a global report, by 2020, there will be over 6.5 million new jobs created in technology areas, but not enough graduates to meet this demand. For this reason, I always encourage young people to study technology and seize this opportunity. I told them: “We study technology to understand how we need it in our lives and how we can change the world that we are living. We need to know where these innovations could lead us and how they will shape our lives and our children’s lives. Although technology can make our lives better, it can also harm our lives too. We need to know what positive and negative impacts it can give to us, to our society and our country.”<\/p>\n
Because technology changes fast, students must adopt a lifelong learning attitude. In the future, most people will switch jobs and change career several times. To thrive in this fast-changing world, students must keep on learning new knowledge. Only with the open mind, they can innovate and lead productive lives for a long time.<\/p>\n
