Tests and Grades<\/p>\n
There are two things that college students are most concerned: Tests and Grades. Students do not like tests, but they cannot avoid them, but grades are something they think they can negotiate. Every time, after the test, a few students would come to my office with questions like: “Why do you only give me 5 points? I think I deserve better than that.” Or “I study hard, at least you can give me extra points so I can pass the course.” I answer: “If you read the course materials, do homework, come to class, take notes, ask questions, and study, then you should not have to worry about the grade.”<\/p>\n
The issue is some students want to get good grades with a minimum amount of effort. Some only study a few hours before the test, or stay up all night to cram everything and hope to pass the test. These students are not ready for college. Some have no motivation to study, college to them is a time they can enjoy life a little longer before facing the reality of unemployment.<\/p>\n
For years, grades are used to measure students’ learning and progress, but over time, grades became the goal of learning.\u00a0 As teachers, we need to make students focus on studying and understand what they need to know instead just focus on grades. I often advise: ” If you put efforts in studying, the grade will come naturally. If you focus on the grade, you will do anything, just to get the grade, including cheating or cramming before the test. You never learn anything.” However, some students believe that intelligence determines the grade. They told me: “But I am not smart enough.” Or “I do not have a talent for programming.” I explained: “Who said intelligence is better than hard work? Even genius like Albert Einstein failed many classes when he was young. But he worked hard and overcame his weaknesses.”<\/p>\n
To change this “misconception,” I organized a three-weeks remedial course for Java in which students must complete 50 short programs. Each day they have to complete at least five programs. I graded them as follows: 6 points for correction and 4 points for completion, as the evidence of their efforts. If all their code did not work, but they completed five programs, they still got 4 points. In the first week, many students completed the assigned works, but no one got the maximum 10 points. But in the second week, one-third of the group got 10 points, and by the third week, two-third of the group got the maximum 10 points. One student declared: ‘Now I believe that efforts mean everything. I never think that I could finish 50 programs\u00a0in three weeks, but I did, and I do not afraid of coding anymore.” I told them: “When you put in the efforts, you got results.”<\/p>\n
