The distracted classroom<\/p>\n
As the teachers, how many of you walk in the classroom today and see that students are ready to learn? Or you look around the classroom and find some students are on their mobile phones texting or tweeting. Or you find some are on their laptop reading Facebook or watching videos on YouTube. They may look at you but continue with their activities, as nothing happens. You try to ignore them and begin to lecture. Several students in the front of the classroom seem to open their laptop to take note, but actually, they are reading email.<\/p>\n
In this distracted classroom, it is impossible for a teacher to teach and for the students to learn. Of course, as the teachers, you can tell students to close the laptop, put their mobile phone away and listen to your lecture. But within ten or fifteen minutes, one, then two, then several would hide behind their desk and start texting again. A few years ago, it happened in college, then in high school. Now it happens in elementary school as children also have mobile phone and tablet too.<\/p>\n
Last week, in the faculty’s lunch room, my friend Jeff said: “Students come to school to learn if they do not learn that is NOT my problem.” I asked him: “What would you do? Just ignore them and continue to teach?” Jeff seemed frustrated: “What can I do? I have warned them, even threatened them but nothing has happened.” Bob, another frustrated teacher, laughed out loud: “I would blame Steve Jobs for creating the iPhone that distracts our students from learning.” We all laughed at his joke, but I could felt a degree of frustration among many teachers. Suddenly, Jeff asked me: “John, what would you do? I answered: “I stop lecturing. If students are distracted and not focus, they cannot learn. I switch into a class discussion where students must engage in learning. By having students discussing instead of listening to a lecture, they cannot be distracted by social media or other activities.” I turned to Bob and smiled: “I am competing with Mark Zuckerberg, either my students read Facebook, or they answer my questions, but I always win.”<\/p>\n
The fact is today students are not like many years ago so the teaching method must change to counter this distracted behavior. You cannot keep students sit quietly and listen to your lecture anymore. Since they do not listen when you talk, you make them talk, and as the teachers, you listen. When students express their view, especially something that interest others, the whole class can experience a dynamic learning atmosphere. When different points of view are expressed with emotions, they spread quickly to the whole class, turn everything into a positive learning environment. That is the power of the Active Learning method. Using this method, I have seen students continued to discuss after class on topics that they care about,\u00a0 and they continued to learn. As the teacher, I just listen and monitor the discussion to make sure that it does not go out of control.<\/p>\n
In Active learning, the teachers need to let students have some creativities over what they learn. To encourage class discussion, I use some “controversial topics” to let them tell me what they have learned and let them express their view so the class can participate. For example, “Can robots replace human?” “If Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting better, what will happen to people? “What happens when everything is controlled by machines?” Sometimes, I add humor to the learning such as “What happens if Steve Jobs is still alive and become the President of the U.S.? The best answer is: “Everyone would use iPhone!” or “What happens if you can go back in time to the 19th century with today’s knowledge?” The best answer is: “You will be burned to death as a Sorcerer.” As the teachers, you let the students imagine and discuss what they are passionate about then slowly guide them to think deeper. To make sure the whole class is learning, each week I ask students to write one page summary of what they learn from the discussion.<\/p>\n
