Reading skills in the Digital Age<\/p>\n
The job you have today may not be the same by\u00a0tomorrow. With technology innovations such as automation and robotics, many things will change as robots will do most of the works. But it does not mean there is no job for people. The fact is there will be more jobs, but they all require different skills and education. A new U.S. government study concluded that in the next five years, there would be MORE jobs in technology areas but NOT enough workers to meet the demand and at the same time, workers without technology skills will not be able to find a job. While there are different views about how the job market will change, and how it will impact employment globally, there is one thing clear: “It is up to the students and their family to adjust to this change. What field of study that they select in college, which schools that they go to, and what skills they have will determine whether they will be employed or not.”<\/p>\n
As technology changes quickly, getting a job is not based on what students know but on what they can learn and how fast they learn. The skills that most students learn today may not be the same in the future so every student must develop a “Lifelong learning” skill where they continue\u00a0 to learn new things whenever they come. The best way to develop this skill is to read as much as possible about technology changes and be prepared. However, today many students do NOT have a good reading habit. They only read what interested them and mostly about trivial things such as lives of movies stars, sports stars, and other famous people. Without knowing what may happen and be prepared, many will not be able to get a job.<\/p>\n
A good reading habit often starts early, usually when students are in elementary school. If they do not like to read at this age, it would be difficult to make them read when they grow up. It is NOT important about what kind of book that children should read, but as long as they like to read, they will build a strong foundation of vocabulary and word recognition that allows them to develop better reading comprehension in high school and college. For many years of teaching, I noticed that students who do not have good reading comprehension skills always have difficulty in college. Many fail because they cannot catch up with the fast pace of study and a huge amount of reading requirements. Some told me that even they spend a lot of time to read, but could not understand the concepts in the textbooks.<\/p>\n
Last year, when I advised them to develop a better reading habit, a student argued: “I always read a lot of things on the Internet. I read Facebook and Snapchat all the time. I do not need more reading. ” I explained: “When you read a novel for enjoyment, you only need to follow the story. If you like, you can reread them again. When you read Facebook or Twitter, you glance through them quickly until you find something interesting. However, when reading the textbooks, you must focus on important things to understand the concepts. You cannot read textbooks the same way as Facebook, Snapchat, or a novel. In Computer Science there are many specific terminologies that you must know. These are new vocabulary that you have to understand them not only precisely, but also accurately.\u00a0 However with such limited reading skills, you will find that study Computer Science is hard. If you cannot pass this “Introduction to Computer Systems” class, how could you go further in your career or develop a “Lifelong learning skills?”<\/p>\n
In this fast-changing digital age, it is up to the students to develop a good reading habit so they can continue to learn more and be prepared for whatever changes to come. Afterall, they are responsible for their learning and their future. Without the basic reading skills, it would be hard to develop a lifelong learning habit, and without continuous learning, they will not be able to survive in this digital age.<\/p>\n
