Teaching for today<\/p>\n
Today’s students are not the same as ten or twenty years ago, and the way they learn is different, so the way we teach them has to change, too. The traditional teaching method of lecturing is not effective to these students. Most of them cannot pay attention for long as they are easily getting distracted by other things. Asking them to sit quietly and taking notes is difficult as they will not learn much because their minds are somewhere else.\u00a0 We need to focus on more active interaction by asking them to answer our questions or challenging them on the subject knowledge.<\/p>\n
Today teachers must spend the time to motivate, and engage them in conversation instead of just lecture. In this technology-driven world, students have many sources to learn from so it is important for teachers to encourage them to develop the habit of researching and investigating for the information that they need instead of providing for them in class. To become “Lifelong learners” they must be responsible for their learning. Therefore, class time must be used for more interaction between teachers and students and among students themselves when “real learning” happens by analyzing, processing, and investigating the issues to develop critical thinking skills.<\/p>\n
By changing the teaching method, teachers also need to change the way they assess students’ knowledge and abilities. Instead of over-relying on tests and exams, teachers could grade students on their ability to analyze and solve problems during class discussion and determine whether they have learned the needed knowledge and develop the learning skills that allowing them to build a solid career. Traditional testing does not work because what we are looking for at the results in terms of what the student did wrong or right, and there is only one way of assessing them. Today student characteristics differ from the past and placing the burden on the students by saying that they do not understand or unprepared only adds to their frustration and discourage them from learning. Instead of a focus on “Right” and “Wrong,” we need to pay attention to the process of learning of students, the way they analyze information, investigate the facts and come up with the solution. We could gain information when we listen to their logic, their view, and correct them when necessary. Having a new way of assessing students will allowing the teachers to examine what it means to be successful teachers, where your students are now, and how we can help them get where they need to go.<\/p>\n
Today the teachers are no longer the “source of knowledge” where we pour our knowledge into students’ head because students could get more information from other sources such as Wikipedia, websites, online courses, and the Internet. But as teachers, we are the guides, the coaches who inspire them to learn and become “Lifelong learners.”<\/p>\n
As a teacher, I know it is not easy, especially when we begin to change our teaching method to something new. It is hard and frustrating, but we do it because we want to do the best for our students and we want to make a difference for the future of our country.<\/p>\n
