Changing teaching method<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: “I have been teaching for more than 20 years using lecturing method. I like what you are writing about the Active learning and agree that it may be a better method for students in STEM. However, it would be difficult for any teacher like me to change to the new method. My suggestion is this method should be taught to new teachers so they can apply it and improve the education system in the future.”<\/p>\n

Answer: When we learn something new outside of our expertise or experience, we feel uncomfortable because we think it is difficult. We do not know how to do it or even do it right, and we may fail. In other words, change is difficult because it requires a lot of efforts with uncertain results. But if the teachers do not want to change, how do you expect the students to change? If we defer to the next generation of teachers and they will also defer to another, then nothing will be accomplished.<\/p>\n
Today technology is changing fast and impacts everything, so education needs to change as fast as technology to develop the needed workforce to improve our economy. Currently, our education remains basically unchanged for hundred years where students sit quietly in classes organized by grade level waiting for the teachers to lecture to them in reading, writing, math, and science. But what the teachers learned could be twenty or thirty years ago, which may not be suitable for the technology-driven world\u00a0 and students know that. How do the teachers motivate students to learn something that they do not believe in? How do students want to learn something that may not help them in the future?<\/p>\n
Of course, changing to Active learning method is a challenge. Many students prefer to sit quietly in a classroom where the teacher tells them exactly what to do, where the assignments are similar to the ones they have done previously in other classes. I know that it is not easy for both teachers and students. Some teachers have asked: “Is there a benefit in teaching something new, unlike anything they have done before?” I have written several articles about this method on my blog.\u00a0 There are scientific researches which concluded that Active learning is a better method for STEM than others. I know that changing to something new outside your experience is uncomfortable. But my advice is “just do it” and watch how it changes the students’ learning and make a difference in their future.<\/p>\n
