Assessing students’ learning<\/p>\n
Many teachers assess students’ learning based solely on tests, and passing tests have become the goal of students. But most tests only give students “Right” or “Wrong” feedback, NOT on how well students have learned. Helping them to understand what they do well or not well, is a better way to increasing their learning and avoiding negative emotions of “pass or fail.” In Active learning, there are other ways that the teachers could evaluate students’ knowledge and skills instead of depending on tests. Since classroom interaction is the key factor of Active Learning method, I often give 50% of the total scores to this factor.<\/p>\n
When students come to class prepared by reading the materials BEFORE the class, understanding the material by passing the short quiz based on reading materials, they have 10% of the total score.<\/p>\n
When students contribute to the class discussion by giving answers, asking relevant questions, expressing opinions, analyzing the discussions and share their ideas with others, they have 20% of the total score.<\/p>\n
When students can demonstrate that they are developing soft-skills such as collaboration, avoided conflicts, openly express their opinions, use appropriate vocabulary, stay focus on the topic, they have 10% of the total score<\/p>\n
And if they have good attendance, arrive to class on time, not skip class, they have 10% of the total score.<\/p>\n
If students can meet the above criteria, they have 50% of the total score already, and if they do well on tests, they will not have any problem in passing my class (I often have five tests, per semester.)<\/p>\n
