Technology is advancing fast and impact many things, many countries, and people are beginning to feel uncomfortable about it. A few weeks ago, A large company ‘s executive lamented on TV: “We have been successful for many years then things change, and everything we do now, do not work anymore.” Of the top 500 companies in the world in 2000, only 180 survive today.\u00a0 But at the same time, some smaller companies are risen to the top and continue to grow at much faster pace. Their formula for success: “Understand and applying technology.” For example, twenty years ago, Amazon was only a small online store selling books, but today it is the biggest online store selling everything to everybody. Fifteen years ago, Facebook was a small social media start-up for students to post pictures and share personal things with friends, but today it is a giant company with 4 billion users all over the world, and billion dollars revenue in advertising.<\/p>\n
Today in many offices and factories, machines and robots are doing the work instead of people. Soon Taxi and Truck drivers will be replaced by self-driving cars and trucks.\u00a0 Soon many houses in the U.S. will be built piece by piece, in a factory by robots, then assemble in the location and construction workers begin to see that their job is quickly disappearing. People who read newspapers do not know that over 60% of news are written by robots; soon movies and TV shows will also be “enhanced” by computer graphics instead of filming in a real location. Actors and actress will act in a “blank room,” the scenery will be “enhanced” by computers.\u00a0 Within a few years, people will buy things from stores that do not have cashiers; their mobile phone will automatically record all the things that they buy and charge into their bank account. It is predicted that ten to fifty million jobs will be lost by 2020, and the most impact will be in developing countries. Of course, new jobs are being created, but most of them require\u00a0 different skills, some are still emerging.<\/p>\n
As students, your future career is in your own hands and what you do NOW will determine how well you will be in the future. You can wait until change happens in your country or you can take action today to prepare for your future, and it is up to you. Several students have written to me and complained that their schools were still teaching obsolete materials. I advised them that online learning is available to anyone without any cost, and they should take advantage of these Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).\u00a0 Few students argued that these courses are taught in English, and they did not have good language skills. I told them: “Then learn English! Do you think somebody would have to translate into your language and bring them to you?<\/p>\n
A Few years ago, when I was in India, my friend Ravi took me to the slump where poor people live off collecting garbage, but they hope to have their children to learn to program because they believe in their future. While India’s economy continues to boom but many people are still living in some of the most filthy conditions in the world. A slum is a place where poor people live next to the dump of the city as you can see garbage everywhere. The waste emanates foul odor with a lot of flies and mosquitoes. There was no electricity, so these children were learning at night under the candlelight because they have to help their parents to collect garbage during the day. The class was organized in a nearby yard, but the smell was still really bad. There was no computer, so these children were learning to write code using discarded papers and pencils. Most teachers were “volunteered” college students who want to make a difference in their society. Even in this extreme poverty, I saw a lot of hope in these young faces, and in their attitudes toward learning.\u00a0 When I asked: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The entire class answered: “Computer Programmers.”<\/p>\n
