Last night a teacher friend called and said: “Many teachers like your articles on STEM and Active learning, etc. However, LIKING does not mean they are APPLYING it because it is hard to change. Although lecturing is NOT a good method for teaching STEM, most teachers are still lecturing. Of course, class discussions can help students learn at a deeper level, but many teachers would NOT have a class discussion as they are worry ing that students will not participate. For many years of teaching, I can say that change is impossible here. You can look at other aspects of education such as course design, testing, assignments, assessing, and grading, all of these have not changed in fifty or even hundred years. I think you are wasting your time.”<\/p>\n
I told him: “I know that change is hard, but it is not impossible. Most of us have spent a lot of time teaching in the way that we were taught, which was lecturing, but it does not mean we cannot change to something better UNLESS we do not want to change. If we do not change, we cannot expect our students to change. Is it possible to remain unchanged when the whole world is changing?”<\/p>\n
He said: “But what if it does not work?”<\/p>\n
I explained: “Of course, if we try to change, there is a possibility of failure, but there is a failure with what we are doing now. Many of our students have no motivation in learning; they just want to pass exams and get a degree. Many of them graduate but have no skills and cannot find a job. Many of them quit school; others skip classes, etc. As teachers, should we do something better for our students? Should we try something new? I know it is NOT easy in the first attempt, but a thousand miles journey starts with the first step. There is no perfect teaching method, but when we learn new thing, we should try and revise it until it works for us. The first time never work as expected, but we learn from it, and the second or third time could be better. There is nothing wrong with trying; there is nothing wrong with a try and fail, but it is WRONG if we do not try.”<\/p>\n
He hesitated: “But there are other factors such as students ‘ attitude and the education system …etc.”<\/p>\n
I told him: “As teachers, we want students to change their way of learning so they can develop a deeper knowledge and better skills. But they will NOT change if we do not change. Therefore, we must change our way of teaching first. Developing new teaching skills means we must work on a particular task, one task at a time, then analyze it to see what do we need to improve it. Change is complicated and requires a lot of work, but we should do it with an attitude that we could make a difference. It will take a lot of efforts before we see any result so we must be patient. As teachers, we do not make change alone, but we need to discuss with others, sharing our experience with others, and support each other. Many teachers will need to learn about this new teaching method, as they read more about it, learn more about it, and try it then share the experience with others and with time, we can make it better for our students.”<\/p>\n
