Every year, on the first day of class, I often told students: \u201cIf you want to have a good grade in my class, you should participate in class discussion. To do well in class discussion, you must complete all the reading assignments. And to prove that you complete the readings, each of you must have at least three questions that you could ask during the class.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even today, many students still do not want to read anything before the class. They expect the teacher to lecture, and they just listen. To make sure that they do read BEFORE the class, I often give a short quiz with two or three questions from the reading materials, if they do not read, they cannot finish the quiz. But it only gives limited learning because some students would read just enough to pass the quiz, but NOT DEEP enough to understand the materials.<\/p>\n
Therefore, I have to rely on the second way by asking students about the three questions that they supposed to ask during class. For example: \u201cBill, tell me about the questions that you would ask me? Or \u201cJane, what are your three questions that you have?\u201d If they do not read materials, they could not come up with questions. However, even with this approach, it still may not get students to read well enough and learn something. Some students could come up with easy questions that anyone could answer just to have questions.<\/p>\n
In that case, I have to go to the third way by divide the class into two groups: The Question group and the Answer group. The Question group must read the materials then meet as a group to come up with at least three questions such as \u201cWhat we think is important; what we like or not like; what we agree or disagree with the author,..etc.\u201d \u00a0Then they send an email of these questions to the Answer group, at least two days before the class. The Answer group must read the reading materials as well as these questions. They should meet to discuss and prepare to come to class with answers such as: \u201cWe do not agree with the important thing that you stated because \u2026., Or \u201cWe agree with you or disagree with you because this is what we think \u2026, \u201d<\/p>\n
By having two groups continue to agree or disagree during class discussion, it makes the class more exciting and lively. Each week, I would switch the group between question and answer and let students challenge others based on the concepts from the reading materials. For many years of teaching, I believe that class discussion, under the guidance of the teachers, could help students develop critical thinking skills, learn deeply, and also develop soft-skills such as communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.<\/p>\n
