Last week, a former student sent me an email asking my opinion. Since it is an unusual situation that some of you may encounter, I like to share with you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dear Professor,<\/p>\n<p>After six years working as a software engineer, I got promoted to project manager. Thanks to your training, all of my projects did well, and I got the attention of the senior managers, and they wanted to promote me to another higher position. Six months ago, I hired a person who seemed to be qualified to take my place so I can move up, but now I find that his skill does not match his claims in the resume. I am not sure what to do so I would like to ask for your advice on how to solve this problem?<\/p>\n<p>I wrote to him: &#8220;Hiring people is not simple, you have to review many resumes and conduct several interviews to find a qualified person. If you make a mistake, you can try to work with this person or let him go, but whatever you do, you must do it quickly.<\/p>\n<p>For any position, you need to give people time to learn on the job and be familiar with the responsibilities. If he has some skills but not good enough for the position as expected, maybe you did not evaluate him well enough during the interview. In that case, perhaps you need to train him more and let him have time to learn. However, if he claimed that he had the skills but did not, then it is a serious issue. In any type of work, honesty is the most important factor. If you find that he cheated or not honest about his experience when you interviewed him, then how can you trust him to work for you and serve your company with integrity?<\/p>\n<p>The issue that if he intentionally claimed skills and experiences just to get the position, then you need to consider what may happen if you keep him. When you move up, and he takes over your projects, he could create problems and liability for you and the company. In that situation, why would you keep him? That is why I wrote that you need to make a decision quickly. In many companies, there is a probationary period, usually about three to six months, and if the person does not meet the requirements, then you can easily let him go. If you have proof that he was dishonest in his resume and application, you could fire him. Let the human resource department know about the situation; they will handle it.<\/p>\n<p>After all, this is a valuable lesson to you and other managers.
