They ask: “Are schools providing my children with the knowledge and skills that are needed for them to do well in today’s society?” Many also blamed the inadequate education system as the cause of high unemployment among college graduates. These issues led to the question: “What is the purpose of the education in today’s society?”<\/p>\n
More than ever, creating an education program that meets society’s need is becoming necessary. But to do this, leaders of education and people in the industries must work together to come up with adequate training programs. One of the important goals is to find ways to help the transition of college graduates into the job market and reduce unemployment. Today, most jobs require skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) but these are broad areas, NOT all of these skills have high demand in the job market. Focusing the training on a few high-demand skills is important. For example, science and technology have the highest demand, and it must be the top priority.<\/p>\n
Since technology changes quickly. To implement technology training effectively, all teachers must receive proper training and the training must evolve when demand changes. A degree in science and technology fields is NOT a guarantee of success unless students receive the up to date training. That means the training program must be current with the needs of the market. The key to a successful technology education requires constantly training and re-training for teachers and having up to date training materials to produce skilled professionals to meet the market ‘s needs.<\/p>\n
Science and Technology requires a different teaching method than teaching history, sociology, geography, or literature. The traditional knowledge transfer by lecture, memorization, and tests are NOT efficient. Today students can acquire knowledge from many sources such as the Internet, e-books, watching scientific experiments on films and videos, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and other technology-assisted tools, but they need guidance in the application of their knowledge to solve problems. In Active learning method, the role of the teachers is NO LONGER about the transfer knowledge, but become a guide to help students to apply what they have learned. But more than that, the teachers are the “role models” that students look up to and who can teach them about cultural values such as integrity, honesty, respect, caring, commitment, responsibility, and lifelong learning.<\/p>\n
In my opinion, the purpose of education is to meet the needs of the society and humanity. As the society’s needs change, the training must change. Although students could learn certain knowledge on their own, they still need the teachers to guide them to develop their character. These characters should NEVER change because they are the foundation and values that create the society. Therefore, the primary purpose of education is MUCH MORE than just knowledge, but also the developing of students’ characters, so they understand right from wrong, good from bad, ethical from unethical, and be responsible for themselves, for their family and their society, etc.<\/p>\n
However, education does not start in school, but in the family. Whatever students learn, they learn first from watching their parents’ behavior. Today many parents are so busy to make a living; some are concerned about nutritional foods, health, clothes, toys, etc. but NOT ENOUGH\u00a0 attention to the character development of their children. Many families send their children to special schools to learn sports, music, foreign languages, or technologies to make sure they will not fall behind their friends. The fact is the knowledge can be acquired at any time, but the development of character and proper behavior happen early in childhood. How children behave, they learn it from their parents. How students behave, they learn it from their teachers. It is important for both parents and teachers to pay attention to this fact to help young people to develop this foundational character so they can rely on it for the rest of their lives.<\/p>\n
By having a proper education in the family, when they go to school and receive a good guidance from teachers, these children will develop strong characters that help them to overcome temptations and grow up to be responsible people. When going to work, no matter what happen, they will act according to their foundational character that they have learned earlier. Only then, they can contribute successfully to their society and humanity. As the primary purpose of education starts with the development of character, the roles of parents and teachers are critical. In my opinion, everything begins with the proper education, and it starts with both the parents and teachers.<\/p>\n
