Even if you like technology, do you want to have a robot to be your teacher? A few years ago, GeorgiaTechUniversity conducted an experiment by telling students in a class that they had an assistant teacher who worked online named Jill Watson. Students could ask questions using their laptop and Jill would give them the answer and helped them with the class. Nobody knew that Jill was a robot. Most students believed that Jill worked at a remote office, so they sent her questions and found that Jill was excellent and fast in answering questions. Of course, Jill has been programmed to make sure that not a single question goes unanswered. Many people praised this experiment as a success, and some schools even considered to use robots to reduce costs and increase efficiency because robots could teach many subjects, work all the time, in any school levels, and never complain.<\/p>\n<p>Last week students asked me whether we will have robots in the classroom or not. I answered: \u201cIt is possible to program a robot to give lectures or to answer questions. The technology already exists. However teaching is NOT about answering questions; teaching is NOT about giving lectures; teaching is MUCH MORE than that. Teaching is not about answered \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d or \u201cRight\u201d or \u201cWrong.\u201d Teaching is about broadened students\u2019 knowledge to the real world around them. Students go to school for MORE than just learning knowledge. The teachers are educators, but also the mentors and the role models, and that is something a machine cannot do.<\/p>\n<p>Technology is useful, but students need more than just technology. They need a human contact where they can talk to teachers, get advice, receive encouragement, and some level of caring.\u00a0 The teachers also want to know how the students learn, how much help that they need, how much they are progressing in class. The purpose of education is not only providing knowledge but also developing the character of students so they can grow up and contribute to society and humanity. Today students learn certain knowledge and skills that allow them to make a living. But knowledge and skills will change as the needs of the society changes. However, the developing of moral characters for students never change because they are the foundation and values of the society. And that is something even a smart machine will NEVER be able to do. For a society to advance and prosper, knowledge and skills are NOT enough; it needs to have more people with moral characters. The primary purpose of education is to develop students\u2019\u00a0 characters, so they understand right from wrong, good from bad, ethical from unethical, and become good citizens.<\/p>\n<p>By having moral character, students can overcome temptations and be responsible for their actions. When they go to work, no matter what happen, they always act according to their moral character that they have learned in school. Only then, they can contribute to their society, and be a role model for others. When a country has more people with moral characters, all the negative things, bad influences, poor attitudes, unethical habits can be reduced and eliminated. Why does today\u2019s society is not as good as we wish? Because we do not have enough people with moral character, many are easily tempted by greed, sex, fame, money, and personal ambitions, etc. They only focus on their selfishness and act irresponsibly for everything. A good education starts with the development of characters so students can be filial to their parents, respect their teachers, law abiding citizens to their country and contributors to humanity. As the primary purpose of education is the development of characters, the roles of the teachers are to educate, mentor and make it happens. The teachers can influence and shape their students to be people with moral character, with the skills and talents to be the innovators of this century. In my opinion, everything begins with this type of education then the country can prosper.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow in this technology-driven world, the excitement over automation and robots have led people to focus on the WRONG thing. Education resides in the praxis of teaching, not the use of technology. The questions we need to ask are: Should we invest our resources in technology or education? Should we buy more technological tools or pay our teachers better so they could do their job? Should we spend money to program robots or to help teachers to have a better up to date training program?<\/p>\n<p>As a technology professor, I use technology in the classroom. I have several websites to post class materials, I have several wikis for students to ask questions and share answers, and I have several servers to store students\u2019 works and class materials. But I will NOT have a robot in my class because I think an essential human contact is what my students need. I know some people may not agree with me, but as a person, I believe that we still need the social contact.
