Having guest speakers<\/p>\n
For many years of teaching, one of my favorite classroom activities is inviting guest speakers to share experience with students. It helps students to learn more because guest speakers always have special experiences and sometimes different views to discuss with students. The interactive nature makes the learning more vibrant and exciting.<\/p>\n
Having just one person to teach for the whole 14 weeks-semester could be boring, I need new ways for students to learn and expand their knowledge. Inviting someone new to teach can brighten up the class, change the learning atmosphere, especially if he or she is an expert in the industry. Five years ago, I could see the shock of my students when Mark Zuckerberg walked in and gave a short lecture. It was a big surprise because no one expect that.\u00a0 Mark went to CMU for business meeting with the University President and the Dean, but he had 30 minutes between these meetings, so I asked if he could give a short lecture to my students. To my surprise, he accepted, and we had an interesting discussion on that day. The same thing happened when we have John Shon, the vice president of Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical lectured on drugs development.\u00a0 Mark Ann, Chief research scientist of Genentech to talk about Biotechnology innovations, and Jian Tao, Vice President of Chan Hung, the second largest manufacturing in China came to talk about the Internet of Things (IoT).<\/p>\n
Having industry guest speakers have great benefit because we are not an expert on everything, so inviting speakers with specific expertise provides more in-depth knowledge to the class. Especially in a technology course where things changes quickly, having people with specific experience can help students learn more about new technology than a college professor.<\/p>\n
Besides experts in the industry, I also ask former students to come back and share their working experience with current students. Having someone who just graduated few years ago to lecture can give students a different perspective. Students always enjoy asking someone “like them” to share their experiences when they were students as well as their new experience in the industry.<\/p>\n
Having guest speakers is not a random activity. It must be planned ahead of time as I discuss the goals and the content that I want them to cover in my class so they can prepare. Most of the talk should be short, no more than 30 minutes and the rest is for questions and answers. Although some people could come to classroom to meet the students but with the advance of technology, I also invite guest speakers to go online to talk to my students. “Skype” and “Go to Meeting” are good choices for these virtual guest speakers. In this case, I often prepare the talk to be an “Interview format” where students ask questions and the virtual guest speaker answer. This format keeps the conversation more lively instead of a lecture which students can watch from their laptop.<\/p>\n
Having guest speakers is not just about listen or asking question, afterward, students must write a short essay to reflect on the talks, and what they have learned to make sure that they pay attention and benefit from the talk.<\/p>\n
