Not all class are the same and students will always behave differently. For example, a few years ago, it is difficult to make students &#8220;not talking&#8221; in class, but now keeping them from &#8220;not using mobile phone&#8221; in class is becoming a major issue.<\/p>\n<p>Your teaching style is a reflection of your teaching beliefs. How you manage classroom is what you put your beliefs into practice. If you believe students are there for you to transfer the knowledge, you will lecture more and using a lot of examples. If you believe that students are responsible for their learning, you will not lecture much but prefer more class interaction. But regardless what is your belief, you are responsible for establishing a &#8220;positive learning&#8221; environment where students are encouraged to learn instead of feeling negative about learning to pass tests. There are many ways that the teachers could do this, no matter their area of expertise, course subject, or structure. Following are some techniques that I used:<\/p>\n<p>I like to give students some control over what they will learn by asking them certain topics and let them tell me what they know and whether they want to share their knowledge with the class. For example: &#8220;What do you think about the Internet of Things? Why it is growing fast? Or &#8220;What is globalization?&#8221; What are the advantages and disadvantages? Does anyone want to talk about this subject?<\/p>\n<p>Students will be more motivated if they learn how to set and attain their goals. I like to challenge them to identify their goal for my course. For example: &#8220;What do you like to achieve by completing this course?&#8221; Of course, you all want to get an &#8220;A&#8221; grade, but how do you achieve that? What activities do you think could lead you to get an excellent grade? Let us explore the smaller goals that will contributes to your achievement. Can anyone tell me?<\/p>\n<p>A classroom is always a &#8220;work in progress, &#8221; and students need to develop a growth mindset. I prefer students to have a &#8220;self-reflections&#8221; on their learning by asking them to write a personal reflection every two weeks on what they have learned, how they learn, what strengths they used, how could they use these strengths in the next t course? Or what they learned about themselves. This will make them thinking more deeply about their learning and motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Many students are afraid of study and fear of tests because of bad experience in school. I would like to change that by praise them on what they have learned each day. By having a positive experience, students feel that they have accomplish something and it will help to combat the negativity bias in their attitude, as well as to increase positive emotions about learning. At the end of the class, sometimes I thank them for making a positive learning atmosphere. For example: &#8220;I am glad that we finish the &#8220;object oriented&#8221; topic today, we have great discussion, many of you are participating well, it proves to me that you are putting your efforts in learning. This is not an easy topic to learn, but I think you all doing well. I am sure that you will do better in the next topic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I do not think classroom have to be &#8220;Pure academic&#8221; but can be broaden into &#8220;real life situation.&#8221; For example: &#8220;What is the definition of success? Can someone explain to me what your view of success means?&#8221; or &#8220;Does success equals with making money?&#8221; &#8220;If Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, and Bill Gates who are all successful in their fields, then what is the definition of success?&#8221; What do they have in common and what are their strength? What do you think is your strength? How do you develop your strength?<\/p>\n<p>Classroom learning should NOT be something stressful, full of anxiety but should be a positive learning environment. The teachers should NOT be someone who threaten them with grades, pass or fail but should be someone who guide them in their educational journey.
