The first year students<\/p>\n
Many senior college professors do not like to teach first-year students, and most first year classes are often assigned to new professors or graduate students in the Ph.D. program. But each year, I always volunteer to teach at least one first-year class because it is a challenge for me to help these students to succeed in learning effectively. My teaching responsibility at CMU is on graduate students, mostly master-level or higher, so when I agree to teach first-year class, most of my colleagues were surprised.<\/p>\n
The fact is many first-year students do not know how to study in college, and they need help. I always spend the first week to explain to them the differences between learning in high school and college and why participating in class activities is important to their learning. Most college students do not know that class participation is an important learning process that can help them in their studying. The more students participate, the better they learn and become active learners, and most active learners eventually become lifelong learners. My goal is to help these first-year students shift from passive learner to active learner. I want to help students who only focus on getting good grades and passing exams to become lifelong learners. That is why take this challenge to help first-year students to develop good studying skills that will help them in their future career.<\/p>\n
I have written many articles about active learning, so today I will write about how to get students to participate in class activities. After explain to students about the important of read the materials BEFORE coming to class, I want to make sure that all of them do follow the instruction by giving a short quiz (3 short questions related to the reading article) at the beginning of each class. Students who do not read will NOT be able to answer.\u00a0 Each quiz is worth ten points and will be added to the final grade.<\/p>\n
The next step is to move students from passive learners (i.e., listen to lecture, memorize materials and regurgitate information in test) to active learners (i.e., read, listen, ask questions, think, analyze, synthesize, and share their thoughts with others.) In my class, the lecture is often short (15 minutes) mostly on key concepts and review important materials, but the rest is for class discussion where I call students by name and ask them to participate in the discussion. Each student who participate well will also receive a five points that will be added to the final grade.<\/p>\n
When the class is getting used to class participation (i.e., most students do engage in discussion, it may take several weeks to get the whole class involve.), then I move to the next step which require students to prepare and lead the discussion by themselves. By asking student to stand up, raises a question, and begins to discuss their view, it make the class more vibrant, especially when the discussion explores different views and ideas. I often listen to the discussion and only intervene when the discussion gets outside of the topic into a hot argument, or out of control. By letting students lead the discussion, I build their independent spirit, and soft-skills (i.e., presentation, communication, public speaking, and leadership, etc.) My active learning formula is simple: Active learning is equal to preparation (Read & Learn) and Participation (Discuss & Share). Each student who lead class discussion well will receive ten points that will be added to the final grade.<\/p>\n
To ensure that students are not just talk, but learn at deeper level, every two weeks, I assign a homework which require them to write an essay on their learning. The homework topic is related to the class discussions where students reflect on their learning. It is NOT a test but a personal reflection on the topics. I want students to analyze and synthesize the course materials into their own knowledge. I told them: “Do not copy from the textbook or the Internet, what other people write is their knowledge, not yours. I want to see what you know, what you understand in your word. There is no right or wrong in the reflection essay, just what you know. The homework helps students to be aware of their responsibility in their learning. It also allows me to know students’ learning progress in class so that I can adjust the pace of the class. Students will be graded according to their essay, and the score will be added to their final grade.<\/p>\n
By giving points for each class activities, I do not need tests to monitor students’ learning. Students can also monitor their own accumulated points to identify their strengths and weaknesses and review their learning progress. They know where they are as compared with others and take actions if needed. When they are actively learning, they learn more and learning become an enjoyable activities that keep them motivated.<\/p>\n
Active learning students are always responsible for their education. Of course, active learning does not means students are the sole responsibility for their learning, but the teachers must also prepare the daily classroom activities to support them to learn. For many years of teaching using this technique, I am confident to say that this is a better way to teach science and technology and develop good learning habit.<\/p>\n
