Effective Learning<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: “I have read your blog about the active learning method. It may be easy for you to require students to read BEFORE coming to class, but it does not work here. My students are used to come to class to listen to a lecture, and they do not want to change.”<\/p>\n

Answer: Of course, habit is difficult to change, especially students have been listening to lectures since they were in elementary school. The reason students do not want to change because they do not know the effectiveness of this type of learning. Currently, students focus most of their effort to learning the material AFTER class, and if they do not understand the materials, either they ask their friends or ignore it. That means they miss an opportunity to learn and their studying may not be effective as they could.<\/p>\n
When students go to class, they listen to the lecture and try to take notes. Of course, they cannot write faster than the teacher’s lecture, so they miss many information. By focus on taking note, they cannot listen attentively or process these information correctly, so they do not learn, but only “Record” information from the lecture. After class, what they have is a note filled with all types of new information, fragmented statements, incomplete paragraphs, and inapplicable concepts. When study this note, they will confuse and could not understand the objectives of the lecture because all they have is an incomplete list of many things. With bad note, they have to recheck the textbooks which requires more time, more efforts, and they still may not fully understand the materials, and eventually, they may ignore it. In the end, what they learn is a combination fragmented concept with a lot of missing information which led to anxiety and the fear of tests and even fear of learning.<\/p>\n
To learn effectively, students must understand the process of learning. By reading the materials BEFORE class, they learn the basic concept and ready for the lecture. If they do not understand something, they can ask the teacher during the class, by asking and getting the answer, they learn more about the concept. Since they already know the basic, they do not have to take a lot of note but spend time to attentively listening to the lecture and process the materials to understand it at a deeper level. They only write on the note important information or key concept so they can review later. By participate in class discussion and asking more questions, they continue to analyzing and synthesizing the lecture materials into an “Insight knowledge” and learn at deeper level where they truly understand the materials. After class, they only spend a little effort to review the materials and ready for the tests. When they are doing well, they are not afraid of test or failure, and learning become a good habit that may last a lifetime.<\/p>\n
I believe by spending a little effort to read the material BEFORE coming to class can save many hours of ineffective study later. To encourage students to follow this active learning method, I always explain the benefit of this approach to all students. In the beginning, some like it and some do not, but over time the response from my students who follow this approach has been very positive. Most of them were doing well, not just in my classes, but in all other classes.<\/p>\n
