The essential role of the teachers<\/p>\n
A person wrote to me: “What is your opinion about the Finland’s education system and the STEM curricula that are taught in European countries? We are considered to adopt those for the education improvement in our school.”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Answer: The best way to improve the education system begins with the teachers. Any improvement without recognize the role of the teachers will fail. A teachers with proper training and adequate compensation can help students to achieve their educational goals. Instead of adopt this model or that curricula from another country,\u00a0 we must recognize that teacher is essential part of the education system and start all improvement with the teachers.<\/p>\n
To improve education, we must start with the development of teachers, from elementary to high school, and college to ensure that they receive decent wages and proper training. Only then, we can build additional supports for teachers to do their job such as up-to-date curricula, more technologies in classroom, more modern labs, and computer equipments, etc.\u00a0 Thus, improving education begin with people who will make thing happen. Contrary to solutions such as buy more equipments, more computers, more laboratories, that I have seen in some suggestions, I can say that without treating the essential roles of the teachers, the improvement will NOT happen.<\/p>\n
Every education system has problems it needs to solve, including low wages, too much bureaucracies, slow to change, lacking supports, etc. But to change, we must start at the foundation where the teaching to students happen, not focus on equipments, computers, labs, etc. It only makes companies that sell these equipment happy, but it will NOT help the students. Few years ago, when teaching in China, I saw an advertising slogan: “Buy a PC and make your children smart.” I asked my friend: “How many parents believe that?” To my surprise, he said: “It is effective, soon after that advertising started, the number of PC sales increased 25%.”\u00a0 I asked: “Then how many Videogames they sold after that?” He laughed, but I knew as a teacher, he feel bad.<\/p>\n
What we need today is a competency-based education, and a realignment of the training materials to meet the needs of the society. When society’s needs change, the education system must change. Today we are living in a technology-driven world, and we need a strong education system that focus on technology to meet the needs of the society. So let’s focus on the retraining the teachers with the most up-to-date materials and provide them a better compensation so they can do their job. Doing so will help students throughout their working lives with the needed skills, and preparing them to contribute to our economy.<\/p>\n
