A few years ago, robots and automation had taken the work in manufactures, and factory workers lost their jobs. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) have taken the work in offices, and office workers begin to lose their job. Few weeks ago, I read an article that some hotels in Japan are using robots to serve meals to their guests and this trend could spread to other countries soon, that means many people will lose their jobs. Several newspapers and magazines are using robots to write financial news, stock market trading, and sports which mostly are facts and data so they can reduce the number of journalist. We are at the dawn of another major change where smart machines can learn and do things better than human.<\/p>\n
When I brought these news to my class for discussion, students asked: “What will happen to teachers? Can robots teach? Can robots write code? Can robots build software? I told them: “As far as I know, there is no robots teachers yet. I do not think there is a demand to build robots to teach. The interaction between teachers and students is far more complex than just lecture or questions and answer. Even with complex artificial intelligence, a machine cannot take this job. I think there will be more technologies in the classroom with videos, and tools to assist the teachers. Regarding robots who write code, it is possible for robots to write some simple code, but we have to program them to do that. That means software jobs are still in high demands. Creativity is something a machine do not have, and innovation is not easy to replicate, and this is how human is still superior. As long as we continue to learn, as long as we continue to create and innovate, I do not think we have to worry about robots compete with us in these areas.<\/p>\n
Today software engineers and developers are needed to build websites, applications, and platforms, etc. As more companies are automated, they need software people to manage their computer systems and monitor robots in their factories. Today Cloud computing has become a major technology, which is essential to the building of a digital economy. Companies big and small, are using cloud-based services or cloud infrastructure as an integral part of their businesses. As cyber security threats are increasing, there is a need for more people who have computing security skills. As more smart devices are being produced, there are high demand for people who know how to integrate these devices, so the Internet of Things (IoT) is another important skills to have. As more companies are building robots, they need more hardware and software people to build, program, and integrate, so software engineering is now in high demand.<\/p>\n
Instead of worry about robots take your jobs, why not study robotics, the field that build robots and control them? If you focus to learn more about these skills, you will not have to worry in the next ten or twenty years.<\/p>\n
