Last night, I received an email where the sender wrote: “I read your blog, which I found very interesting. If STEM is important as you said, why not many students are enrolling in STEM?. What is keeping students from learning STEM? ”<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Answer: There are a lot of talks about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) but to implement STEM in all levels of the education system requires investments and the proper training of teachers. I believe STEM areas, especially the application of information technology, is the key to a country’s competitiveness. In this global economy, we must help students to develop the knowledge, skills, and creativity to be the innovators of the Information Age.<\/p>\n
Before answer the question “What is keeping students from learning STEM?” We need to ask: “How many students know what “STEM” is?” Without a clear definition and proper explanation on the impact of STEM, students will not study STEM. For example, how many students and their parents know what people who work in STEM do? STEM is a broad areas with over two hundred fields, so we need to get the information on STEM careers to all people. We should provide what these professionals do and what are the important fields that have high demand to all children, students, parents, and teachers so they can make the right decision. To encourage students to study STEM, we have to start at the elementary schools to get young students to interest in these fields and build a good foundation in high school, only then, we can have more college students to study STEM.<\/p>\n
Today, students do not know much about opportunities in STEM. They know more about iPhone, iPads, Nintendo and video games, so we need to associate these exciting things to computer science and engineering. We need to get more technologies into the high schools. We need to train more teachers in science and technology. We need to rethink the way we teach programming that are often considered difficult to encourage high school students in learning how to program. We need to get young students engaged and excited via STEM competitions or computer hackathons. We need to explore many aspects of science and technology to get them interested in learning STEM.<\/p>\n
Today, students need more guidance and advice for them to select the proper fields of study. Traditional process of go to school, get a degree then look for job, is obsolete. Student must plan their career as early as possible, preferably in the last two years of high school. Today an “educated person” is NOT someone who has a degree, but someone who can think logically, computationally, and have the ability to continuous learning.
\nThe future leaders will be those who have the skill, knowledge, creativity to be “Innovators of the Information Age.”\u00a0 The future belongs to the next generation. We need to get our students to learn STEM to meet the demand of a technology-driven world; else we will lose our competitiveness and being left behind in this Information Age and the global economy.<\/p>\n
