For example, I told students, for every hour in class, they need at least two hours of studying. Students would question me why so much time since they only need a few hours to study for many classes in high school. Many first-year college students failed because they did not have good studying habit to deal with a lot of materials. Many were not matured enough to handle the responsibilities and studying requirements.\u00a0 As teachers, we accept all students, regardless how much they know and how prepared they are, but letting students fail means we do not fulfill our teaching mission. Every student who go to college have a hope, and failing in the first year is something that can be avoided.<\/p>\n
As teachers, we want all students to succeed, but the question is: Who is responsible for students’ success? The school and teachers share some responsibilities, but students are responsible for their studying too. But what can we do to make them succeed? The traditional system is based on the “Pass and Fail” principle with many exams, students who do not pass the exams are eliminated, and only the best remain. Is this system effective in producing highly skilled graduates? Or is it possible that we produce graduates with the skills to pass many exams? What can we do to retain some students and guide them to succeed?<\/p>\n
For many years, teachers were trained to teach, but times have changed as today they have to deal with many things that did not happen in the past. For example, how to deal with technologies in the classroom; how to deal with students who spent more time with smartphone than listening to the lecture; how to motivate students; how to support and guide them to develop lifelong learning skills, etc. Today, students are also not like students in the past. Many are active, and cannot listen to a lecture for a long time. Is it better to change the teaching method? Instead of having them listen to a lecture for an hour, is it be better to get them involved in class discussion or actively engage in problem- solving exercises?<\/p>\n
I believe teachers must be trained in several teaching methods so they can select which is best for their students. Students need guiding and clear instructions to keep them thinking, analyzing, comparing, and applying knowledge. Students learn more when they know “WHY” they need to learn and the rationale for “WHAT” they are learning, as well as why the teachers choose certain teaching methods and learning activities. For example, I always give students a list of things that they must learn each week to allow them to prepare for the lesson in my class. I assign reading materials for them to read before the class. I take attendance to make sure my students do not skip class. I encourage them to ask questions and motivate them to participate in discussion. To accomplish these things, on the first day of class, I set a policy about class attendance, disturbances, and cell phones usage, etc., to make sure that students understand what they must do in my class to achieve their goals.<\/p>\n
Most U.S. school often have two exams for each semester, one in the middle and one at the end. Therefore, some students do not seriously study until a week before the exam. I do not like that approach, to make sure students learn continuously, I have a short quiz each week, always\u00a0on Friday, so that I can grade over the weekend, by\u00a0Monday, students know the results. My view is students need to know their progress at any given time in class so that they can adjust their learning. My students always know where they are and what they need to do to pass my course. My grading scale is clear (from 0 to 10 points), and accumulate throughout the class, so students know where they stand in class and how much progress they will need. With ten weeks class, there are ten quizzes and their grade is based on a standard scale: (93-100 points is “A” grade; 85-92 points is “B” grade; 75-84 points is “C” grade and below 74 means failure). I remind them that weekly quiz is more than just a grade but a measurement to helps them to know their learning achievement.<\/p>\n
Traditional teachers are often strict who sometimes instill a fear among students. But I believe teachers must maintain a hospitable relationship with students to guide them successfully. I like to reduce the fear of students in my classes by encourage them and deemphasizing competitions among them. Classroom should be a collaborative environment where students work in team, not a place to compete for win or lose. Teachers should focus on helping students to understand the subject matter even if it may take time rather than hurry to complete the course materials.<\/p>\n
A good teachers provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning progress.\u00a0 Students will show respect when teachers care for them, provide clear instructions, and return student work within a reasonable time. After all, college studying should be a place where we nurture students and guide them to be professionals who will contribute to our society. Students are our future, and we are responsible to build the future of our country.<\/p>\n
