Most factory outsourcing works also come to an end which creates problems to countries that are depending on factory outsourcing.<\/p>\n<p>The report also found there are factory jobs available, but they require different skills, mostly managing factory automation. Many large manufacturers report they have a serious shortage of qualified applicants for these highly skilled positions. The problem will get worse in coming years as more factories are using robots and approximately 100,000 jobs are expected to go unfilled due to a shortage of these skilled workers. The question is why not train unemployed factory workers to do these jobs? The report found that most factory workers have limited technical knowledge, many only have a high school education, and have difficulty to handle complex works, so they were laid off.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is a high school education is not sufficient to meet the skills requirements for these technical jobs. One thing is clear: when factory implements automation; workers need to have the proper education such as programming and knowledge of computer systems to meet these needs. No matter where you live, factory automation is happening, from the U.S. and Europe to Asia and soon Africa. It is important for all high school students to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), so they can pursue higher education or go to vocational training to learn these technical skills.<\/p>\n<p>All over the world, there is an urgent need to get more students into these technical careers, but how many leaders understand the automation trend and the fourth industry revolution? How many leaders understand that STEM education is essential for most future jobs? How many leaders are still advocating open more factories and industrial zone to attract outsourcing works based on the economic policy dated in the 1990s?<\/p>\n<p>Today automation with robots and artificial intelligence will create many jobs, but workers must have certain knowledge about science and technology, which are NOT available in many countries. Last year, when teaching in India, I saw some factory managers worked with a college to provide training to students in technical skills. A senior manager explained: &#8220;Not all college graduates will work in an office, but many of them will be working on the factory floor. Yes, they are factory workers, but not like the workers of the past where they use the power of their muscles, these new workers will use the power of their brain. They will manage the assembly lines, but workers on these assembly lines are not people but robots. These students are trained to program robots to do their jobs. What we are doing now is to help prepare them for new jobs of the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, a professor lamented: &#8220;Our problem is there are two opposite directions in our education system. The old and the new systems and they do not meet. The &#8220;old system&#8221; have a traditional curriculum with many academic courses that consume most of the students&#8217; time. The &#8220;new system&#8221; have a curriculum focusing on STEM to train students for the career of the future but is still in the exploration stage and not accepted by education leaders. Many teachers preferred to teach the &#8220;old system&#8221; or the same things that they have been doing for many years.\u00a0 They did not like the new STEM curriculum with computers and technical things. Many did not have those skills, and they are afraid of losing their job. STEM education has not been accepted in the traditional school system. At least, not yet. As a result, many students still select fields of study based on what seems familiar, not necessarily what will be needed. With limited information about STEM education and the impact of the technology-driven economy, most students have no idea to careers that might be good for them. With many families are still following the traditional careers; many students are still taking traditional courses in college, and many will graduate without specific technical skills and may not find a job.<\/p>\n<p>My friend Abhishek explained: &#8220;There are a lot of talks about STEM and technical knowledge. However, to implement a new curriculum in a traditional education system is very difficult to overcome the resistance to change. It may take ten or twenty years for the replace the &#8220;traditional teachers&#8221; who are educated in the &#8220;old system&#8221; to a younger generation of teachers who are familiar with technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I told him: &#8220;In this technology-driven economy where technology changes every few months. It will be too late, and the result could be a disaster. I think students and their family must demand a change in the education system. By giving students and their family exposure to the facts about the global economy and its impact, the parents will understand what will happen if their children do not have the skills. By giving students and their family more information about the automation trends, and the shortage of skilled workers, students will know what they need to study.
